Great pictures skinny Dave. Wish I visited Samui in the 80's when the beaches were cleaner and the locals less commercialised.
Love the old photo's mate, keep them coming.

Cheers Ken F

Here are some pics of Samui, again in the early 1980s, 81-83. I believe the first is from the dock in Surat Thani

Today, the view below would be looking at the Anatara Lawana Resort.

And of course the Saturday afternoon entertainment between watching bouts of Muay Thai on TV. Saturdays were the only days on Chaweng that the electricty came on during the day for the purpose of allowing the locals to watch and gamble on the televised matches.

You would never recognize anything now let alone find Your way around! Central Festival, Lotus, Burger King, McDonalds etc etc. Just another City stuck on an Island! Love the Chaweng Beach Photo. Incredible, So Untouched!

We would take the overnight train, 2nd class, from Bangkok to Surat Thani.. Then get on a ferry.

1984; on the ferry to a paradise island with the missus (who still retains that position...) ....

We used to stay on Lamai beach, because it was quieter..... A bungalow was 25 Baht a night ($1 in those days).

No internet and in fact, no electricity most of the time. There was a generator running in the evenings.

Fabulous Ian. We were so lucky eh. A genuine pristine paradise in those days.
And how innocent we were then. 55.
If you have anymore golden oldies please put them up on GTR.

Awesome pics guys I love it! I remember Koh Phangan back in the 80's....absolutely nothing there. Paradise it was. I recall a full moon party ...all 25 of us....look what it became. Places like Thong Nai Pan were just wild, people cooked from their own kitchens, all manner of "substances" were available. We were all so lucky to have been able to experience it.
