A giant kilometre marker at the end of the Paholyothin Road in Lampang province in the North will be torn down to make way for more traffic lanes.
“It has to go,” Eknarin Chantawong, a senior highway official in Lampang confirmed on Tuesday.
Eknarin said he was aware of opposition against the plan to dismantle the marker, which was built with a budget of Bt3 million nine years ago.
“But the project to expand traffic lanes covers this spot. The expansion is needed because this area has had traffic congestion, which is very serious during holidays,” the official explained.
He said his agency would consult Lampang provincial authorities on whether another symbol would be erected in place of the giant marker.
The huge structure was constructed in 2008 by former governor Direct Konklab. The budget came from development funds for communities near a power plant.

Nakhon Phanom, near the clock tower. Taken in 2012. Sadly I wasn't on a bike then! The first time I saw these kind of markers. Rather confusing at the time, I recall..!

At the Baan Sob Moei School, overlooking the confluence of the Salween & Moei Rivers - one of the more remote border villages in the country. Very steep 4WD road access is possible from December to May, but pretty much boat access only throughout the Wet Season.

An amusing kilo marker at the turn off the R3010, Mae Rim, to Wat Phra Phutthabat Si Roi, a Buddha footprint temple.
Fabulous little hill ride, and good coffee shop too..!
