A recent post from davidfl concerning a Christmas ride & get-together prompted a moment of reflection.

There are many travelling throughout SE Asia at this time of year for whom, away from family, the true spirit of Christmas can seem but a distant memory. I can understand some who feel that 'when in Rome, do as the Romans', but many find it not so easy to simply shrug off their background, their experiences & their culture. Well past commercialism, even fulfilled in being able to make a contribution through giving to the needy, some may also enjoy the comradeship & fraternity that can flow from celebrating with others over a simple mince pie, a hot turkey, christmas pudding or whatever.

I know from my days in Thailand, a predominantly Buddhist country, that although opportunities to give are readily apparent, finding Christmas Lunch or Dinner is no mean feat. (I can recommend The Nest at Chiang Dao if you are stuck).

In case there are travellers motoring through Vietnam over the festive season & looking for a traditional Christmas get-together then should they be in or around Da Nang there's a small Ozzie pub - The Billabong, nothing less - set one block back from My An Beach (part of China Beach) who will put on a traditional Christmas Day lunch & dinner. I believe they have a web-site if it takes your fancy, otherwise you can contact the (pommie) manager Theo on 0120391733 or at [email protected]

Cheers & a very happy Christmas.
