Hi everyone I'm from Australia and am new to this forum,

I have recently returned from my honeymoon in Thailand and having riden bikes north of Chiang Mai am now planning a trip on bikes with a mate early next year. I have read the information on this website regarding renting bikes in Chiaing Mai and the common practice of handing over your passport as collateral. I understand that most people see this as common practice and have no issue with it. My concern is that in a foreign country your passport is your most important possesion and i dont feel comfortable handing it over to a bike shop. Does anyone know or have experience with leaving something else as collateral such as a large sum of cash? Any help would be appreciated.

Regards and thanks in advance for your replies!
