Wat Chokmkao Manilat is the main temple in Houei Xai. Built in 1880 it is a Shan style wat In 2013 it looked like this [IMG]     [IMG] with this view down the steps to the Mekong [IMG]   [IMG]   In August 2015 they've done quite a bit more work on the place [IMG] [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]   check it out sometime it is worth the hike up the steps for the view , or you can ride up around the back on the concrete road.

Often an overseen place, as people are eager to cruise down the Mekong or rush along the north trail. Houei Xai is not without attractions (like the crumbling Fort Carnot) but also the left Mekong rim up to the Kings Roman casinos ... I am sure that you will add these pictures also David :)

Upstream 30 kms from Houei Xai on the way to the Golden Triangle is
Wat Suwanna Phattaram, an old temple majestically siting on a small hill

Over the back of the big hill in Houei Xai & slightly south / downstream way is the main market.
