Hi there... got time off for a Lao trip starting Dec 4-12 or thereabout... Coming From ROi Et... I saw a thread here saying that Thai Customs, etc, would be closed 4-6 Dec due to Kings Birthday holiday... do they really close the border for 3 days, or only some crossings? I hope to use the Friendship bridge or the Tha Li border in Loei... also anybody know if they have Lao visa on arrival at the Loei crossing? I could, alternatively, cross at Chong Mek on the 3rd, but this is far from where I want to ride for this trip. As far as I have heard, the Nong Khai bridge is open to motorcycles, please inform if this is incorrect...

    Well, thanks appreciate the info!

    Paul ... -crossings

The bridge & land border crossings are open 7 days a week.
These 3 crossings where you have to use a ferry are
    1. Chiang Khong / Houei Xai
    2. Bun Khan / Pakxan
    3. Nakhon Phanom / Tha Kaek

    Land border crossings are
    1. Tha Li / Kenthao
    2. Chong Mek / Vang Tao

    Bridge crossings are
    1. Nong Khai / Friendship Bridge
    2. Mukdahan / Savannakhet
& normally you cannot enter Laos on a motorbike across the bridge, although some guys have had success at Nong Khai recently.
Savannakhet is tough, & often NO EXIT as well.

BDP recently crossed & entered Laos at Tha Li / Kenthao.

I would like to try the Tha Li crossing, exit Friendship bridge. Anybody know if Lao side offers visa on arrival at this crossing? An internet search brought some "Yes" indications, but still not positive. I was intrigued when there last year. Apparently, the Nan-Lao border DOES have visa on arrival.
