This just in from a friend in Vientiane. Just to confuse things, three out of the four cell phone folks in Laos have added a digit to their numbers. This'll sure confuse my "contacts" list when I add the digit incorrectly!

Laos has 4 people in the MOB business: M Phone, Tigo, Unitel, and ETL
Before this, they all had 020 + numbers with 7 digits as follows and
now three of them (one not, yet) have added a digit in front of their previous 7-digit numbers giving them numbers with 8 digits as follows:
M Phone : add a 5 to previous numbers beginning with 4, 5, or 6.
M Phone: 020 5 4 X X - X X X X 5 5 X X - X X X X
for example my number is now: 020 5 520-8524 ,
Somphou's is: 020 5 540-1266
5 6 X X - X X X X
Tigo : add a 7 to previous numbers beginning with 7.
Tigo : 020 7 7 X X - X X X X
Unitel : add a 9 to previous numbers beginning with 9 or 8.
Unitel : 020 9 9 X X - X X X X 9 8 X X - X X X X
ETL : Do not add a number as yet. In the future they may add a 2 or a 3 perhaps.
