Road No. 9 upgrade expected to be completed early next year

(KPL) The Road No. 9 upgrade in Savannakhet Province has been confirmed to be 91.94 percent complete and is expected to be fully complete in the beginning of 2015.

"The upgrade of the road section, stretching 58 km, was financed with grant support from the Japanese Government at the cost of US$30 million," said the Manager of the Road No. 9 Upgrade Project, Mr Viengvilay Soulinthone.

Commenced in late 2012, the road upgrade project is to ensure that the road is able to accommodate trucks with a load capacity of up to 11 tonnes per axle.

"Road No. 9 in Savannakhet province is important for the region because it provides a convenient route for goods transport, investment, and tourism. These sectors contribute to the socio-economic development of the Lao PDR, and Savannakhet in particular," said Mr Viengvilay.

"The existence of this road helps to improve the livelihoods of local people, generates income, improves local infrastructure, facilitates transportation, and commercial production as well," said Mr Viengvilay.
