Laos city begins New Year early

Luang Prabang will start its festive activities to celebrate the traditional new year on Thursday, the organising committee said.

The former capital will have at least 14 activities running for 10 days starting from Thursday, the Tuesday edition of the Vientiane Times quoted the organisers as saying.

The activities include parades, as well as art and cultural performances, it added.

These include subordinate parades of 200 monks from various temples, art performers and cultural groups from various villages as well as a parade of the provincial and district authorities.

As in Thailand, Laos has announced a three-day official holiday from next Monday, April 14.

Its new year festival in Luang Prabang is the most popular event for locals and foreigners.

Like Songkran in Thailand, Laotians also celebrate their new year with the water festival.
