I was sent this link on Youtube. Laos is changing fast. You can't deny a country progress, but the "adventure travel" image and opportunities are fast fading away.

Road improvements, Casinos, Mining, Dams, and now a Mega Mall with Disco/nightclub and video gaming center. It isn't the Laos I came to know any longer. That's Progress! :?

In just another 3 years Vientiane (the capital of Laos) is to receive its first Mega Shopping Mall. The construction started in July 2011 and should be completed by 2013. It is located in Sikhai Village, Vientiane.
J&C Expat Services was given exclusive access to the plans and blueprints of the new "Regal MegaMall City"; a 5 storey mega-mall which will include over 1000 shops. Regal MegaMall City will also host restaurants, a children's playground, a video game arcade, a huge cinema complex and of course a hypermart (like Tesco, Big C, Carrefour or similar). Later, in a second phase, property development around the site has been planned which will include modern private residences for rent or sale.

About time... Laos is kind of getting pulled into the modern era by all the countries around it... even Cambodia has malls.. Vietnam is the China + 1... Thailand is trying to be (and partially succeeding)...

The blah blah in the above presentation is standard issue for mall openings... no need to go through it all.

The most surprising thing about Laos is how they managed to remain so backwards for so long. Credit to the government, I guess...

If you seek out backwards or undeveloped countries, there's still Burma, and, to some extent, Bhutan.

Once the first American fast food chain opens.. KFC, Pizza ....., Mc Donalds.
That really will be the beginning of the end.

You can bet you bottom dollar there will be one of each in Vang Vieng..

Always found good local / Indian food in the main cities / towns.. That is where the fast food chains would be located.
Up country in the middle of no where.. the trusty muesli bar comes in very handy. There would be no market / spending power in these areas for fast food anyway.
