When one considers these shots were taken almost 20 years ago, they are truly remarkable shots; a fact so clearly confirmed by the look on the faces of on-lookers in the photo where you'd been stopped by the police! Great shot it is as one can literally see the confusion engendered by the police who clearly had no idea where you came from, what you were doing where you were going.......

The photos truly warrant a trip report, if only furnished as a grouping of memories from the ride - dis you ride from CNX? Through Laos? Visa issues? A guide? The side-car?...........

Crazy!

looking back you have to laugh - how little luggage we carried compared to today's adventure riders with huge side & top boxes. Plus no backup vehicle. It was all part of the adventure - just another ride from Chiang Mai.

On this trip returning from China it rained all the way from from Jinhong to Oudom Xai.

The roads & water filled potholes were horrific to negotiate, plus there was the 180 kms Luang Namtha - Houei Xai jungle track to negotiate.
Discretion ruled & we headed for Pak Beng to try & hire a boat to get up to Houei Xai & out of Laos .
We arrived in Pak Beng in the dark from Oudom Xai, found a place to stay & then found the only restaurant open - Sunmi / Johnnies restaurant.
That night in Pak Beng we celebrated the end of our trip. I don't think I have ever drunk so much Beer Lao in my life with Scotty, Walter & LLoyd - it was mega, & I doubt if I can ever reach that Beer Lao capacity again!

The morning after

We were a bit of a novelty rocking up the way we did, & the local cop thought it was pretty cool too.

Easy going, golden days, and he would probably get into trouble if he did that today !

There’s a lesson in there for all of us - Less is often more.

Xiangle is the Village my girlfriend comes from. It's a 'Laos Lue ' Village. Same ethnicity as 'Thai Lue' . When I met her 12 years ago the Village had a couple of communal bathing places. Very refreshing I recall. The Village girls would collect the days water from there with 2 buckets balanced over the shoulders on a bamboo or wood stick. You can see scars on the shoulders of many woman here who used to carry the water the same way for years and years. The bamboo mat walls on the houses are now being replaced with concrete blocks unfortunately.
