Approximately 16:00 hours, Friday the 30th, see gnarly black ER6n headed north on the Chiang Mai Lamphun road, immediately pull quick u-turn and make way to Sanchai Kawasaki, 16:10 proceed to drool over two orange ER6n’s , quick sit and unexpected offer to ride the parking lot on one ER6n. Will soon get over not waiting for the ER6, and be happy again with the decision to get D-tracker as a city scooter.

That orange color rocks!

Hi Tony,
Congrats on your new baby, I am sure you will soon be used to the additional performance, and not too long after, maybe looking for a bit more??? as said above.
Are you adding Khon Kaen bike week, 20th 21st Feb to your list of destinations, we are working hard here to make it a great event.
We have a good ride out planned for the Saturday, so would love to see the bike and how she goes. John

Hi Friends,

Even if I wrote in some previous post about these ER-6N and the Versys :

"I should say I don't like both and for me they are pale and poor creations of the Japanese Bike Industry.

I don't think it would be adapted for LOS and are not enough dedicated.

Before caring about what model to distribute I think we should lobby a bit more to make the big bikes accepted by Thai Traffic Authorities (driving on highway, respect...)"

I review my thought and realise a trial test:

Done ! yes, done, this morning I just tried this small marvel. I went to the KAWASAKI dealer in Paris -KAWASAKI Etoile- and tried this ER-6n 2009 model.

What to say which has not been said yet ??? I saw somewhere that one said it's a "Learner" bike, yes but I think that Veterans could still enjoy on it.

I would call such bike a bicycle, quite light with its 174 kg. Quite "pretty", not so aggressive, the rear look could be improve by the dismounting of the number plate holder block (quite huggly).

-Driving position and confort : good for me it should be improve with a higher handlebar, it could not be qualify as a confortable bike for long trip.

-Motor: some 72 HP, very, very good, with torque and very easy to run, the 6 gears are accurate and neutral position easy to find.

-Choke absorbers and frame: not the best of this model, rear shock to be improve, overall a bit un accurate, maybe due to my 100 Kg.

-Brakes: the model I tested did not have the ABS but it was more than efficient for normal use...has to be tested on a longer test.

-Tyres: for stock model, that's OK, at least for the first mount

-Exhaust sound: I think this should be improved, I don't like the 2 cylinder noise from this catalysor, sure it coudl be improve and the addition of a Power Commander couple to the catalysor suppression could for sure help to gain some additional precious HP for a low cost.

In summary, I think this is a wonderfull light machine, for a Thai light price (a today good value for money) that one could easily improve by some small tunings even iff stock performances are more than enough for Thai roads.

Just for your information, I discover that in France KAWASAKI organise the Coupe KAWASAKI (a very popular beginner race with ER-6n stock bikes) with this bike with a big success. I did this promotion race some 38 years ago on 2 stroke 3 cylinders 500 cc KAWA....It was called "Coupe MOTUL KAWASAKI"...Souvenir, souvenir...

Money wise this bike is sold in France 6100 €, roughly 274.500 TBH (at a today's rate of 1 € = 45 TBH) you would need to add 22.500 TBH for the ABS option. In Europe that's honest return for money but not a "wonderfull bargain". 225.000 TBH for Thailand is a wonderfull price and I think a very good value for money...Bravo KAWA !

My curiosity was satisfy, that's a good bike, I think that the tax system in LOS does not allow a true comparaison between brands as how could you compare it to a Yamaha, a Suzuki or other when you know about the tax system which destroy the starting price ???

How could I justify to pay some 1.100.000 TBH + for a BMW, apart from an unconsistant reflexion ?

Tony, thanks again for having brang this bike to our attention !

The ER6 - N is a great price. I have a couple of 750's and am tired of having servicing issues, especialy if you are out of your local area.

when I heard about the ER6 N i went staight up to the showroom and found the guys really helpfull. i could not make my mind up on the colour so the guys their took off the side apanels and mixed the colours up for me. Great service. i decided to go for the black and get mine from Surat on thursday.

For the price and piece of mind of getting orginal cheap parts (made in Thailand - ful set of coloured parts 9K) I decided to get one for touring round.

Does any one know where you can get hard case panniers for these or a descent windshields?
also thinking of putting a gps on the bike - anyone had any virbation issues - I heard they fixed it with this 2009 model?

Talking about windshields - I wonder how expensive it is to get the complete Ninja fairing. It should fit and has a big windscreen.

I will try and find out if they can fit or be modified

I just had the complete parts price for a colour change on th eEr6 N and incluidng the tank it comes to 9,635 - so for those that can not makke their mind up on which colour to choose - just buy another set!!

The 2009 model included rubber mounting of the handle bars and all footpegs to reduce vibes, motor already had rubber mounts.

Talking about fiting a ninja fairing to the ER6N. I thought the bike was made in two versions, one naked and the other with a full fairing. But I don't know if both are available here.

Jon, you're right, but the ER6F isn't sold here, have seen her in Europe already. Technically similar but the 2009 model got a complete rework on all the fairings. Cheers, Franz

Hi Guys!

Well- I've already put 1000km on my new ER-6n and I'm loving it! Rode her to the Lopburi Bike Week via Khao Yai National Park last weekend and she cut through the twisties like a hot knife through butter-

Some of you might recognize this spot:

I had the only ER-6n at the rally and it generated a lot of interest and I got a lot of questions.

Good times!

First mod was to get rid of that big ugly tail piece:
er6nTailMod1Sm.jpg

er6nTailModSm.jpg

Very easy to remove- it's almost like the folks at Kawasaki knew people would want to get rid of it so they made it easy for us

Today I got the bike fitted with a Givi case and LED turn signals:
020509GiviInstall5Sm.jpg

I found a shop in Bangkok that built me a custom rack for the Givi and I'm VERY impressed with the quality and price. Just over 8000 Baht for the rack, the signals, the case, and a backrest, custom built and installed!

I'm still looking for a screen, because when I'm cruising over 160km the wind becomes a bit tiresome. Over 180km and my helmet wants to fly away... Still haven't found the top end on my ER-6n...

Eventually I'd like to have the seat redone- I find the stock seat tilts forward a little more than I like. Also thinking about lowering the bars and definitely interested in aftermarket exhaust options. The stock exhaust has a nice rumble to it, but with three cats it's incredibly heavy.

Want to hear what the stock exhaust sounds like? Check it out:

Happy Trails!

Tony

Hi Tony,

very nice look by removing the plate holder (wwhich is huggly, in fact) but what do you do with the plate number ? I think you'll need it ???

Would be a pitty to see such brand new nice bike hold by the Brown's !

Tony,

Congrats on the new bike and I have seen them here in CNX - bloody nice! Now answer me this, you tidy up the back end by removing the plate hanger and it looks very sexy. Then you f*ck it all up again by putting a huge, ugly topbox on it!!! I know they are practical but so are throwover panniers mate!

What's next - a Sam Browne belt/dayglo vest???? ;-)

Cheers,

Pikey

Salut Azoulay,

I don't have a plate yet (no red plates for bikes in Bangkok), but once I receive it I'll attach a bracket to the mounting points under the rear fender here:

I rode the Ninja for about a month with no plate and the BiB didn't bother me once. I've already put 1000km on the ER-6n with no plate, and again, no hassles (knock on wood!) :D

Happy Trails!

Thanks Pikey,
I hear ya regarding the rack. I bought it for one reason only- to haul around my wife's crap when she's along for rides. Like a typical female she's not able to travel with just the bare necessities
The good thing is that the rack comes off easily, so when I'm riding solo or at the track I can just remove it and restore my bike to sexy mode 8) in a flash.
Also have to say that the Givi monolock system is quite brilliant- just one button and the case pops off of the rack. Bard and Trent and I are planning a 6000km road trip in March and I think the case will come in handy, even if it does make my ER-6n a bit less sexy...
Happy Trails!

Phew! It's a relief to know that you truly are a man of taste and integrity ;-)

Cheers,

Pikey.
Taste? Me? LOL!!! We've met, right?
Wouldn't you know it- now the missus is having second thoughts about coming with me to Udon this weekend! Did I buy this case for nothing?!
Hmmm... Single in Udon...

I just picked up my ER6-N from Surat on Thursday and then drove it a couple of hundred K up to Chumporn and the on the night boat to Koh Tao.

I the dealers in Surat were really helpful and even provided a red plate and are sorting out a special 3 same digit plate for me. (they have the black in orange in stock)

I found the bike pretty light and able to nip though the big lorries although it does get pushed around by the wind a lot.

I also found the riding position a bit odd - it pushes you forward which is very different from my chopper position that I am use to - although my wrists and knees ached a bit my arse was fine, so I think this will be OK for longer trips.

I was a bit surprised with the fuel consumption - I reckon you get around 250 KM to a tank I was hoping for a bit more.

I spent a couple of hours driving round the back roads of Chumporn to get a feel on the winding roads and I even managed to hit a huge hole – (typical Thai one that rides around corners – the ER6-N fell into it and rode out – I am sure that had I been on my chopper I would not have made it. So I am impressed with the suspension.

All is all I think it is a well styled bike, brilliant bit of kit and well worth the money.

I bought a Garmin 310 and will rig it up on the bike tomorrow - sadly it is not that useful on Koh Tao as there are no roads in the system!!

Can’t wait till next week when I will take it up to BKK - I intend to go for the ferry crossing rather than the bridge and hope the Garmin will lead me to the place - does any one know what time the last crossing is?

Tony I like the photos of your bike - although I think side panniers would look a little better. I emailed Yo today from the shop you had your stuff made up at - do you know if they can get the Givi side boxes V35N as I would prefer to go with those than a top box!

Cheers Kev

Can anybody post what mileage they get from this bike? E.g. How many km / liter?

I have read 200 and 250 km per tank, but I am not sure what that means. The tank holds 15.5l according to the spec, but I am sure the fuel light comes on long before you have used it all. Seems like we are looking at a worst case of 7l/100km (I am used to european style ratings) so we can probably expect 5 - 6l/100km once broken in.

That's 20km/l. While that's not great I get 30 on the 250cc D-Tracker so IMHO it would make sense given that this one has much more power.

When I picked the bike up it had 1 bar of petrol in it. When it is empty the fuel tank indicator is suppose to flash but I did not want to risk it. I filled up when it hit around ½ tank. (also filled with Gasohol – I hear that this burns faster but I have not experience in this area)

I filled up 3 times on Thursday and based on those fills I reckon that I would get around 225Km to the tank cruising at a steady 120/ 130 Km.
Due to the shape the bike is not that aerodynamic, but I did expect better mileage as it is a light bike.

Hope that helps

Kev
