Late 80s. R1290 Mae Sai - Golden Triangle....
before the "super" highway.
The old road was flat, straight through the rice paddies & they were forever repairing it cheaply. It was years before it was finally done properly, so in the wet season it was always a mess after heavy rain. Some politicians & karachagans must have made a lot of money from all the repair contracts they gave out. Too much was always siphoned off & there was never enough left to do the job properly? They once tried brick paving & it only lasted half a wet season. Ha. Ha. What a joke that one was. |
Yes, indeed quite a few must have made a bundle out of that road as I remember that in 1977 we did that road and it was in the same state as in your pictures - mud and lots of water from the rice paddies on both sides so you could not make a detour to escape some of the worst parts. _________________ "There's always something waiting at the end of the road, if you aren't willing to see what it is, you probably shouldn't be out there in the first place." |

1994: The Chiang Mai floods outside the TAT office on the Chiang Mai - Lamphun road.
R1150 Phrao - Wiang Pa Pao. The Snail getting it up on the old XLR250.
1993: Struggling - walking & pushing - it up R1149 the Mae Sai - Doi Tung Burma border road. On the wet greasy clay couldn't hold it to kick start the Baja & get going again I think was the problem. Having made it up, I got to stand at the top & snap away. Ha. Ha.

Several more pics here as well. The Bier Stube in 1990. The bikes out front are a local's C90 Honda, my R100GS, Eddie's XT600 Yam from Switzerland and Ian Ball's R80 from the UK. The bike rental shop next door is still there with the same sign on it, "Running by Mr Somchai"!
And to think we complain about a few potholes these days.
While the roads have improved vastly they have also filled up with traffic. The old days of Songkran were much less hazardous on bikes that's for sure _________________ Relationships in Thailand: Buy Phone, Buy Car, Buy House, Bai Loei!

Fresh "love" in an Akha village up on Doi Tung "a few years ago."
Two Dutch riding mates were close on 2 metres tall & "enamoured" with the local damsels.....
well sort of.
Compare the hand sizes & the footware too, not just the height. _________________ Davidfl

Another few I found in the remains of my collection. The bridge to Burma
Looking alongside the bridge back towards Thailand. Nowadays it's overflowing with vendors selling most anything you can imagine
Need some help on these next two. From a memory thats fading faster than the colours in the pictures, they are the 1174, or possibly the 1173?

1982 Country House in the Mae Sa Valley, one of my favourite hangouts for many years.
1982 Poppy Fields near Hmong Nong Hoi, up in the Mae Sa Valley.
Hanging out with the Red Lahu, up on Doi Larng (Phahompok) N-W of Fang I think. Late 80s??

Snail
Reckon that these are both on R1129, Chiang Saen - Chiang Khong going over Kiu Khan hill after the landslide, or was it before they'd asphalted the road even? _________________ Davidfl

Not so long ago. The Mae Chaem - Khun Yuam road before it was asphalt. Probably does not look a great deal different today, except the dirt road is now a black one.
The Doi Ang Khang - Nor Lae road not long after they built it. It's still a beauty & the drop off is the steepest in North Thailand.
R1149 the Doi Tung road, before the Mae Fah Luang foundation had started. Note the lack of trees. The MFL Foundation has done a fantastic job re-foresting this area!
Still on R1149, but the Burma border road from Doi Tung -Mae Sai. Almost as steep as the DAK - Nor Lae road, & when the clay was greasy it was a killer if youre tyres were at all worn down.

R1194 Mae Sarieng - Mae Sam Laep used to be a real work out. The last 15 kms followed the stream & it was 65 stream crossings in 15 kms. It's all paved now & still one beautiful tight steep twisting road from Mae Sarieng to the Salaween River.
Mae Sam Laep used to be hive of activity whilst the Karen had control of the land on the Burmese side.
Indeed Mae Sarieng was a bit of a boom town in those days.
At the same the logs were coming out from Burma by the thousand.

Negotiating a stream, probably not very competently en route to Khun Pae, S-W of Chomthong.
Once a foot came off the pegs for a dab, you never got them back on bouncing over the rocky stream bed.
What about the riding kit though? _________________ Davidfl

Riding kit wasn't from TJ, but the GT Rider "fashion of the day."
Now here's a beauty. When I actually walked & hiked a bit.
But where the hell is it in North Thailand? Anyone know? _________________ Davidfl

Another viewpoint. "Rock Tower" above Nong Hoi & overlooking what used to be the Erawan Resort.
Roadside below "Rock Tower"..
Note the red track road. I believe there is a real road to "rock tower "nowadays. _________________ Davidfl

R120 at the sala viewpoint overlooking the Phayao lake
I think my Honda wing pictured was my 2nd Wing before the big bore kit & extras. But I can see this one already had the front fork brace & Koni rear shocks.
Anyone recognize the little guy on the right? _________________ Davidfl

I wondered what photo you were going to dig up of me?
It's good to see that all your "early" photos are reappearing
I still miss your old bookstore wall of photos
Now where is my scanner & those old photos of you inside "LoveBirds"? |

Shawn
Got some more coming, when I get time.
Meanwhile..
R1089, on the road to Doi Mae Salong from Tha Ton
Dumped it on one of the smaller steep rutted tracks between R1089 & R1234, trying to get to Doi Mae Salong another way. I understand this track is now asphalt.
Hanging out with the Yao gals at Pa Dua.
Doi Mae Salong
We used to stay at the old Mae Salong guesthouse & it was one of the grubbiest noisiest ghouses Ive ever stayed in.
But the morning wet market with all the Akhas was right outside the front door.

Franz, sorry but you're not in the right part of thecountry. It is in the north & the peaks are about 1500 -1700 metres. _________________ Davidfl

Forgot about this one & the answer: Doi Tung, just above the temple entrance.
Who wants to go there next & get some new photos for the GT Rider forum?
If the weather's clear you can get amazing panoramic views all the way to the 'Khong! _________________ Davidfl
