View Full Version : Around Udon Thani

Today I left Udon on the 210 towards Nong Bua Lam Phu then turned left onto the 2313 to Nong Saeng, this then becomes the 2316 and goes to highway 2. Here I cross straight over onto the 2025 and follow this to Kumphawapi, this is a shitty road for about 6km as its being resurfaced, at Kumphawapi I take the 2393 and what a splendid road this is, its my first time on this great road and really enjoyable riding. At its junction with the 227 I turn left and ride to Waritchaphum where I take the right turn onto the 2218 through to Phu Phan and join the 213, its another right and I stay on this road until I reach Somdet. I am not a great lover of the highways but this section of the 213 is pure magic, hills, curves, you name it and its got it, this road and the 2393 have got to be the best roads I have ridden in this part of the country. At Somdet its a right onto the 2041 for about 12km then right onto the 217 until just before Kham Muang then its left onto the 227 to Wang Sam Mo, here I have to turn right but its still the 227 heading north until I reach the 2393 and turn left onto it for another good ride. I go back to Udon from here the same way I got here just in the reverse direction, I detest highway 2 with a passion and I am happy to do the extra mileage just to avoid it. I thought todays ride was going to be about 300km but when I got back home I discovered I had ridden 520km today and what a fantastic trip it was too. So anybody who thinks there are no good exciting roads in this part of the country do this ride and you wont be disappointed

It seems that you know a lot about Udon Thani!
I am here in Cambodia.
I am looking where possible to rent bike in Udon. If 250 cc, not available, then ordinary bike maybe OK.
I will fly to Udon and would like to know where to go in town to find the bike shop. I will not stay in Udon but visit friend in the countryside.
Any name, address, tel # or e-mail add?

I only went to Udon for the first time just over a week ago and had an enjoyable week there but I have my own bike and so know absolutely nothing about renting one but I am sure Ray will probably be able to help out

There are several places to rent the smaller bike they are easily avialable, bigger bikes I don't know of any. Several in the area of the Robinson Complex. This is not something I have ever done but have friends who have resnted. Best bet is there are ton of tuk tuk drivers by the complex, they should be able to get to one.
I think there is one almost next to the Bangkok Grill. Coming out the Robinson's complex you would trun to your rigth. Go to the light walk across the street adn then go to the left. You will see the BKK Grill, I beleive there is a rental place very close to that, not more then a block walk.
Another area to research would be what is called Farrang Alley, it is driectly across the street from the Robinson Complex. If there is none in there they can probably direct you something there shouldn't be a language problem since itis a farrang hang out area.
Phone number sites ect. I believe Dave has already given you the best info your going to find.
Might want to check www.udonmap.com (http://www.udonmap.com) you mihgt find an advertisment there.
And as Forrest Gump would say "that is all I have to say about that" LOL

WE came back from Ubon today via Muckdahon, pretty much the same route, great ride but the crazies were sure out I would need both hands to count the near misses today, worst day I have ever had for that.
The worse Lucky was on his Goldwing, Three small bikes with the three kids on each of them. Two are biside eachother, one in the back decides to be a clown ab nd pases just a lucky is going by them, Guy comes out lucky swerves out of the way. Kid decided it was great sxeein a Gold wing turns his head back to ward the Goldwing and head right at me. The bike lane is only about twelve inches wide. I swereved and may had about four inches of aphalt lewft befier the five foor drop off in the rice paddies, he cleared us by maybe two inches. I really wanted to go back catch him and beat the crap out of him , Not a norm for me. But at 110 and a five foot drop off he could have killed the wife or I or both of us.
But I didn't probably best. Most of the time I just chalk it up to being Thailand, but this went a bit further that that to me. Accidents I understand stupid things like that no.
Were home safe and sound had a great ride this weekend little 535 just purred along. Sure was hot out there today.
