Captains Log Stardate 16-01-2006
Hi this is my first trip report under my new name of Captain_Slash, I previously posted as Colin but was given my new handle by BobS on a recent trip with him, his wife North and Jan, the name arose over my habit of stopping for a piss every ten minutes, thats according to BobS. Now that the introductions are over let me get on with the report. I left Nan heading south on 101 and at Wiang Sa took the left into town, at the crossroads I turned right onto 1026 and followed this to Na Noi then on to Na Mun. Once out of Wiang Sa it was suddenly a delightful journey, little traffic and twisty well surfaced roads, at Na Mun the road becomes the 1339 and straight on goes to the national park, I took the left turn for the fishermans village and carried on, after about two km the road really narrows to a single track but the surface is still reasonable. About 8km from the village the road is being widened and is about ready for tarmac so okay to ride on, its like this for about 4km then its the nice new wide section that was probably only recently finished right to the village. I was going to get a boat across and go on to Nam Pat but I didnt really make an early start and decided to leave it for another day so I rode back to Na Noi and turned right onto 1083, one of my maps shows a left turn after about 25km that takes you back to Wiang Sa but I obviously missed it and just kept going until I eventually hit the 1123. The 1083 was a great ride apart from a fair bit of loose gravel in lots of places, a total lack of other vehicles and lots of really twisty bits makes this a really great road. I came to a small place called Den Chat and could see the road works ahead, from here it is all dirt as the road is being widened, most of it is compacted but some is a bit iffy, and its dirt all the way to the 1123. As I turned left onto the 1123 and rode off I noticed the sign for Nan that said 153km and it was already 4.15, shit I was hoping to be back in Nan for 4.30, bugger missing that turning. I rode on for about 40 km and then hit the dirt section which I could have done without, 18km of offroad riding was not what I needed at this time of night, this section has never been asphalted its just a track through the woods which makes up 18km of route 1123 or 1243 as I didnt notice where the numbers changed. I rode this section a couple of months ago heading the other way and what with nearly hitting a four wheel drive on a corner and slipping in some mud I wasnt looking forward to it again but this time I rode the entire section standing up remembering my off road riding days in England about 25 years ago, I finally emerged onto tarmac again in one piece with no scary moments this time. (Its a shame you were not there to see my off road bit on a bumpy dirt section Jade) I put that bit in because I have a reputation for two things in Chiang Mai, one is that I am too frightened to take my bike down bumpy dirt roads and the other is that I letch onto middle aged American single mums. Once back onto tarmac I thought great but the surface is bad for a couple of km then is okay, I followed the 1243/1162 back to Wiang Sa riding as fast as I could then took the 101 back to Nan eventually getting back about 6.30. Most of todays ride was on new roads for me and I really enjoyed it even the getting lost and being out later than I wanted bit didnt detract from the enjoyment, so what was meant to be a 240 km trip turned out to be a 370km one. In the next couple of days I will have to backtrack and find out where the road was that I was looking for

Hey Captain - you forgot to mention that "slash" is British slang for a piss, and that your endless supply of it comes from the 4-5 litres of water you drink each day. What goes in must come out.

I did the 1083 last June on the TDM, and did a post. They had not started the road work east of Den Chat.

Captain_Slash, a friend of mine completed an iron butt 1000 a few years back (1000 miles in 24 hours) and I asked him how he managed "unhydrating" while riding. He pointed to the Sneaky Leaker:

Maybe this could extend your riding times?
If you're riding with BobS, I think you could easily stop for 10-15 minutes every hour and still not have him overtake you.

Hi Barry

When Colin is stopping once per hour, the paces match just fine. More than that, I have to wait for him.

I happen to have a manly bladder, and always wait until we get gas. Fill one tank, drain the other.
