I took the 108 from Chiang Mai to Mae Sarieng, the usual journey and no road construction to worry about, about 30 km before Mae Sarieng I happened to see on my left a lot of fresh earth up high and something going on at the top. About 50 metres further on was a turning on the left, the 3005, so I decided to explore it

It is not in perfect condition and not really for sports bikes

Ever so green here though

Looks like the makings of a good ride

It looks like a bit of rainy season damage here

Its a bit muddy here, the only mud I see today thats for sure

After 17 km I ride through the village and the right fork ends here

So I go back and take the left fork and the concrete road carries on

But not for too long unfortunately

I ride on a bit further and the road alternates between concrete and dirt, the only problem is you go over the brow of a hill on concrete then it suddenly turns to dirt when you are going too fast, I got caught out but luckily stayed on

The scenery here is really amazing and yet again a virtually traffic free road

It looks as if its only going to be dirt now so I turn around and ride back, this left fork went about 3 km before completely turning to dirt

These two were sitting down but the camera seemed to worry them and they quickly departed

Back to the village that I left about 15 minutes before

A backward glance at the village

Back to the roadworks and not a lot done

Even this narrow road is fun

I guess this is the river that runs to the left of the 107 as you approach Mae Sarieng

On the way back there is a crossroads and to the left I see another village so I go for a look

Just great isnt it

I am now back on the 3005 heading back to the 107, a bit marked the current surface but a new bit ahead though

About 5 km before the 107 I see a lorry coming through the trees to my right and theres another turning there but I am running late so that can be explored another day

A nice twisty here

Its the edge of this football field that I saw from the 107

A view of the 107 standing at the edge of the football field, I am so glad that I took this road today, its not on any of my maps and another gem that I didnt know existed

Yay Captain. R3005 certainly is a bit alright.
I did it in Feb 2004

http://www.gt-rider.com/thailand-motorcycle-forum/the-mae-hong-son-loop-yet-again-t323.html

Next day I was on the road by 10.30 am, and with a bit of time to spare I checked out & GPS-ed a couple of “new” asphalt side roads. The 2nd one was unreal & rates as one of those “most amazing steep & winding mountain road” category.

Take route 108 east towards Chiang Mai, & 32 kms out at the police check point turn right (south). Go in just 175 meters & you're at the Huai Hung school. Turn left & the road soars straight up onto the ridgeline, then twists & turns like a roller coaster track for 15 kms for the asphalt to end in a Karen village Huai Hia. Believe me this one is a totally amazing 15 kms side road & the ascent to Huai Hia is incredibly steep & tight, & its asphalt! En route, there are a couple of Karen villages, plus other new concrete / asphalt side roads going to other villages (which need to be explored).
Also, from Huai Hia, a dirt road continues to exactly where I’m not sure, but the info I got was that you did not need to turn around & come back out the same way - there is an exit, linking up to another road.
So, if you’re looking for a new piece of asphalt or dirt link up to explore, then check this out, it is totally awesome!
Note that in places the asphalt does get a bit broken up & may not be such fun on a sport bike or a cruiser.

But it did not have a route number then, however it is actually on the GT Rider MHS Loop map.

It really is an amazing little road

But with a varied road surface to keep you on your toes

Check it out sometime you adventure riders!

Yes it was certainly a great little ride David, I was a bit low on fuel and time yesterday but definitely plan to go back and explore some more next time I am passing

Check out the Bo Sali / Kong Koi roads to the east of R3005. Gorgeous roads, scenery & villages.

The Bo Sali/Kong Koi Road (Rd 4085) links with the 3005 via Kong Koi. Coming from 108 riding towards Bo Sali you will come to a jucntion (about 6.7 km). To the left (SE) goes to Bo Sali, to the right (W) goes to Mae Waen and to the SW goes to Kong Koi and on to the 3005.

Coming from the 3005 take a left turn about 5.3 km from the 108 to Kong Koi and on to Bo Sali.
