I left Fang this morning heading north on the 107, this soon becomes the 1089 and then took the left turn for Doi Mae Salong the 1234. I last rode up here in early January and was surprised today at how green it still is as I was expecting fires everywhere, but apart from a couple of places todays ride was one of greenery. After about 10km beyond Doi Mae Salong there is a left turn to Thoed Thai which I often take, when I rode there in November a couple of km from this turning a large section of road had disappeared down the mountain and they were there with machinery rebuilding the sides up, I thought at the time that it would take a month of Sundays to repair that, but when I rode it today it was completely fixed. I rode as far as tarmac allowed close to the Myanmar border then returned and carried on along the 1234 until I came to the left turn for Doi Tung, the 1149, I rode up here occasionally taking left turns down unnumbered roads but nothing of interest, I emerged near Mai Sai and got on the 1290 until I saw the signs for the new friendship bridge and rode up to take a look, its all finished but nobody was around, does anyone know when it opens? I carried on stopping at Sop Ruak for a lok at the Mekong, which looked a bit lower than I remember in January. Then it was on to Chiang Saen and eventually Chiang Khong, I decided to take the smaller road that follows the Mekong rather than the 1129 halfway between Chiang Saen and Chiang Khong, I realised this was a mistake after a few kms but foolishly carried on, the 1129 as I remember in January is a much nicer road both in quality and scenery. I got into Chiang Khong and looked for a room, the first two places were 200 Baht, the third one 250 Baht but on the fourth one I got a room for 100 Baht with hot water at the Borisut guest house. Next stop was to check out the 7-11 for water, then it was food time and I found an Italian restaurant called @ the pier which has not been open that long and he cooked me the best pizza I have had for ages. This place will definitely be getting my custom whenever I am in town

Capt Slash
Dont forget to check out the disco in the rice paddies, about 10 kms south of town.
It only cost 30 baht & was good value for money. I'm sure they'll remember the us from a few weeks ago.
Also, poke your head in the Lomtawan & say hello to Porn & Lennard for me too will ya...
