BIKE RENTAL IN PAKXE
Down south in Pakxe, the Lane Kham hotel has 3 Honda XR250s for rent at US$20 a day.
The bikes looked to be in good nick when I was there a few days ago.

Found another rental shop in Vte.
Name: KT
Mobile: 020 550 7770 & 020 5614201. (No English spoken = good luck when you ring.)
on Setha Thirat road, just a couple of hundred metres up from the Kopchaideu Pub.
They claim to have 7 Honda XR250 Bajas for US$20 a day. Bike condition did not appear to be so great, but if you cant get anything at PVO, then give KT a go.

This is perfect! Thanks for this post...it's practically everything I need to know. Does PVO or any other place there sell the Laos Guide Map by any chance?

Such a small world - we have a friend who sent us a photo of herself at the Khone Phapeng falls and she is standing at the exact same spot as Davidfl in his photo!

based on you recommendation I sent anmail to Stan, letīs see what he comes back with=

Hello Stan,

I am PICO-PICO in GT Rider. I saw Davidīs post saying that you might help in finding bikes to rent.
Here is a difficult one=
I just did over 5000km riding from Phuket up North and back..You see on the photo that I have a sidecar.
( attached to Honda Silver Wing 600cc automatic) I need a sidecar because of a weak right leg.
I am sure there is nothing in Lao ready for rent. But who could perhaps make one for me??

Cheers Pico

I just rented a 2002 Baja from Fuark for a week. My mate rented a 2004 model for 8 weeks. I do not want to comment on the quality of other shops (especially seeing as I only saw a few other bikes), but Fuark's bikes were top notch. New rubber, everything in fantastic working order. He is a good guy as well, and into his bikes. I would check out what he has before you hire another bike. As I understand it, some/all of the bikes at Green Discovery are Fuarks, so check them out also - might just be a little more expensive - good though if you want to drop the bike off at a Green Discovery shop out of VTE.

Headed to Lao mid July and looking to rent one bike out of Vientiane and one out of Luang Prabang. Seems like Green Discovery's got a good rep but is a bit pricey. Does PVO still rent bikes for 15 bucks a day? Do they have good quality bikes or offer a pick up service In Luang Prabang. Replies appreciated.

What is pricey in Laos is not really pricey at all. Being tight on spending will result in getting a lower quality bike, use of your time to keep it going and so on. On my way back from Vang Vieng yesterday I stopped to help two broke down Baja from SB, I didn't have the time to deal with them but did get the riders in touch with the rental shop.

I'd rank the bike rental shops this way:
1. Green Discovery - They rent from Fuark but have branch offices in Vang Vieng, LPQ, Luang Namtha, Pakse and soon Thakek. With locations around, the support is great in addition to Fuark's bikes.
2. Fuark. Limited English but he is available to help you if you need.
3. PVO. Descent bikes, will support you when you need it. 3rd for sure.

Done after this.

I rented my bike from SB all I can say is that it was cheap

- 2 punctures
- fuel guage didnt work
- seat seemed to have lost its padding after 20 minutes (and we did 800 kms on it)
- wing mirror wouldn't stay tighened
- headlight not fixed properly, so every bump, headlight would hinge up, luckily we didnt travel at night

as they say...... YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR

If I had paid the extra for a better bike, would have enjoyed the journey a lot better. (Mind you we still enjoyed the trip)

PostPosted: 22.12.2007, 09:03    Post subject: Rental Co-operation and it just got better

While you can rent bikes from a few places around town, I am also acting as a link between my wife's company, Remote Asia and Fuark. The result is a co-operation between Fuark and my wife's agency and our price is the same or USD $ 1 more per day as if you would rent directly from Fuark but the value added is this:

Arrow I inspect each bike 1 day before you take it, multi point check and test ride.
Arrow We will sit with you for about 1.5 hours if you need to go over road conditions, hotels along the way, what to see while you are riding and so on.
Arrow We can set hotel bookings for you based on a fluid schedule (of sorts)
Arrow We can hold your valuables or any gear while you are gone at our home.
Arrow A full line of protective gear is available and special requests are taken as long as you give 3 weeks lead time so I can order.
Arrow Gear for cold/wet weather available.
Arrow Mobile Phone rental for Laos at an insanely cheap price.
Arrow Road assistance in English and we can act as translator for most situations. Our network of friends and business contacts around the country come in handy as one of our clients found out with a sliced tire.
Arrow Each rental comes with a free supplemental tool kit(from me) for repairing the basics on the bike including tire irons and optional pump.
Arrow GT Rider Laos maps and select unpublished maps.
Arrow Countrywide pick up of the bike, shipping fees dependent on location
Arrow Secure online pre-payment.
Arrow Additional packages for border crossings into Vientnam (minus the bike).
Arrow Advice on the best places to throw down cold beer Lao at the end of a riding day.
Arrow In most cases, we help with the first visit to the fuel station, strange but it helps later.

I can vouch for Jimoi & Quynh's ability to deliver, through their company Remote Asia.

They set up a trip with a guide for my son & I in August, riding through Laos before flying onto Vietnam.

Whilst renting from Fuark's is relatively simple, Jimoi & Quynh found us a great guide, good bikes and decent hotels.

As we were travelling on an incredibly tight schedule, due to school holidays, we did not have the "luxury" of having problems.

With Quynh overseeing our daily schedule & progress we kept to our overall timetable whilst amending our plans as required.

I cannot recommend them highly enough and would have no hesitation in using them again.

You can read my son's trip reports here:

KT has 10 x Bajas @ US$20 a day.
15 x Honda Waves @ US$8 a day
15 x Suzuki Smash @ US$7 a day

I used the services of Jim and Quynh at info@remoteasia.com and highly recommend them!!! Me and a friend spent 18 days riding around the north of Laos on 250cc Hondas during November 2007. While Jim is the man with all the information, Quynh is the real brains of the operation. She was fantastic in her attention to detail and always responded to my emails and calls in a timely manner. We used info@remoteasia.com for not only bike rental but flights around Southeast Asia and some hotel bookings. We paid half up front through Paypal and the rest when they met us at our hotel in Vientiane. Having a phone provided by them was also a nice touch.
We plan to return next year and see the south of Laos. Thanks Jim & Quynh and see you then.

Pete_Tallahassee

PS: We went through the trouble of taking all our riding gear with us and we are glad we did. Nothing fits like your own stuff.
