Ranong-Through The Mountains On A New Road

Postby Captain_Slash » 13.02.2009, 20:40

The route Hwy 4, 4091, 1007, 6011, 1007, 4091, Hwy 4

Total distance 179 km

I took hwy 4 north for about 28 kms then took a right onto the 4091
Image

Image
A narrowish but very twisty road
Image

Image

Image

Image

Image
Plus the good scenery thats in abundance in this province
Image
After 12.8 km the 4091 turns right and will become the 4139, I carry on ahead on an unnumbered road for 1.9 km then take a left onto the 1007, this is a wider road but straight it most certainly isnt
Image
After 9.9 km I take a right onto the 6011 and this road starts off the way it remains, excellent
Image
After 5 km possibly its the end of the 6011 as theres a blue road sign here but no number on it, the km marker now shows I have 18 km to go on this new road
Image

Image

Image
A little bit of a cave in already
Image

Image
Three years ago I rode this road but back then tarmac wasnt on it and its my opinion that this road has only been completed recently and only seen one wet season at the most, I remember having to take off my sunglasses as it was like riding at night with them on as it was in a bamboo forest and I was completely shielded by the trees, this was part of the dark section back then
Image

Image
When you can see the scenery its stunning but a lot of the time its riding amongst the trees
Image

Image

Image
I reach the highest point and stop in the shade for a break and a snack
Image

Image

Image

Image
I knew that I was heading in the right direction to be on this road that I was looking for but at the peak I knew for certain as in the above photo right in the centre at the top of the trees you can see the hole in the cliff
Image

Image

Image
After 14.3 km this brilliant piece of tarmac finishes
Image
But this isnt that bad to ride on
Image
1.5 km later and its a concrete road
Image

Image
I am nearing those cliffs so the crossroads cant be far away, after 19.5 km in total since I got on the 6011 I reach the crossroads. I cant seen to find out exactly where this crossroads is, 1 km down the road the Police Station says Nasak Police Station but who knows
Image
I turn round and ride back enjoying it the way I first did three years ago, this is how I remember it starting off, but back then my map only showed a road, I didnt have a number to go by so didnt know that I was not on the 4139 that I should have been on
Image

Image
This 1.5 km unmade section is still the same too, it never ceases to amaze me how a small section doesnt get finished, especially as this would be a very easy section to finish, all the hard work has been done up in the hills
Image

Image
From my memory this is where it was a steep rocky section and I had the Bms fan running non stop climbing up it
Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image
Finally I am on the downwards slope, I never in my wildest dreams ever expected to see this road asphalted as when I rode here 17th feb 2006 it was a rocky then a muddy track finally just a hard surface and it must have taken them ages to transform it into this lovely road. I only wish that I had some photos from then but sadly I didnt have a digital camera and I never bothered taking any, it would be good to look at the now and then pictures
Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image
Just one non stop bend, this road also climbs a lot higher that either the 4139 or the 4006 does, I guess a GPS device would have been a useful tool today as this road probably isnt on any map and who knows I might even be the first GT Rider to ride and photograph it
Image

Image

Image

Image

Image

Image
I reach the 1007 and turn right to ride to hwy 4
Image

Image
Not far along here its a nice new shiny surface
Image

Image

Image

Image
Then its back to the old surface which is a bit potholed in places
Image
I reach hwy 4 and turn round to enjoy these twisty backroads a second time
Image

Image
At the end of the 1007 its a right onto the 4091 and a fun ride to hwy 4 where I turn left and ride home.

Well todays highlight was finding and riding the 6011/? now that its been properly surfaced, a lot of people only visit Ranong to do a visa run, theres more here than that, some dam fine roads to start with

I have added a section from my trip report of 17 feb 2006

Highway 4 does not need mentioning it is just a dual carriageway, after Petchaburi there were about three police speed traps in the space of 100km. When I reached Chumphon I decided not to turn right and stay on the 4 as I have done this road twice before on my phantom, I carried straight on over the lights onto the 41 and stayed on this road for about 45km until I came to a right turn for the 4139, I took this turn and thought wow this is great as it went through very high limestone cliffs with great scenery and everything was lush and green. After about 12km I came to a village and straight over the crossroads then the road turned into a narrower concrete road and after about 5km it turned to unmade. Little did I know what I was in for, I carried on for a couple of kms and thinking I had taken the wrong turn I asked someone only to be told yes this is the way to La-un. I decided to press on and it just got worse, this was really in the wilds, steep very rocky roads and finally reaching a level ride it was muddy, (theres been a lot of rain here recently) a couple of times I nearly dropped it as I was sliding about so much. Then it was downhill which seemed to last for ever, finally after about 45 minutes I emerged from the darkness of the forest and began to see evidence of life, I carried on for another few km and finally I was in La-un and waiting for me was a nice wide tarmac road, the 6001. After getting back on tarmac the bikes fan finally wasnt needed anymore ( it had been on pretty much constant since I first went offroad) the 6001 came to a t junction at the 1007 and I took the right turn which eventually brought me to the 4 which I had foolishly decided to give a miss, the 1007 is a seriously twisty fun road to ride. I turned left onto the 4 and had about 32km to Ranong. I arrived there and went straight to the Suriyanon Hotel where I stayed two years ago when I was last here, it is now called the Wood House guesthouse but I got the same room as before and at the same price, 100 Baht. I was cursing taking the 4139 but if I hadnt then I never would have known what it was really like and the bike and me both made it in one piece so no harm done, it is doable on a road bike, obviously not a Goldwing or a Harley. Todays trip was 635km and the plan for tomorrow is to get to Trang, but preferably on tarmac this time.

Marvellous Colin.

I know it might just seem to some that I just chip in a simple comment or two to your posts but I am not quite sure how to express envy, gratitude to you for sharing and appreciation for the effort you make without giving you a big pat on the back.

This report has a large number of shots showing height of trees, banks and inclines.

Absolutely stunning !

Thanks Ally

Yes I consider myself a very lucky fellow being able to pursue one of the two loves of my life on a daily basis in glorious surroundings and weather (music is the other one in case you wondered) Sharing it with anyone who wishes to view my reports is a pleasure too, I will photograph my map and post it on here, although this particular road isnt on it the other good loop I did is

Colin

LAW has been changed,, now on just simple border crossing will give you only 15days.

i saw it somewhere but cant find that now,, many have had problems on this in the borders...

i found this from TV:30 day entry stamp : for the majority of passport holders, this is a 'permission to stay 30 days' stamp only obtained (free of charge) at a port of entry into the Kingdom and is issued without the need for a visa. At the discretion of the immigration officer this may be extended for up to 7-15 days at an immigration office after which time the holder must leave the Kingdom. This is NOT a visa."

Arh yes I know very well about this. With NO visa, only 15 days for land border crossings. A mere 9 days ago I crossed into Thailand at Nong Khai from Vientiane on the last day of my 1 year multiple-entry visa to get the last 3 month entry (or so I thought). But nope, read the fine print & you must utilizise the visa before the date shown, not the last day! Result = a 15 day entry & not 90 days.
My suggestion to change the 7 to an 8 for the last day of entry was not well received. Oh well, Oz here I come in a few more weeks.

I have a one year Non O so every time I cross the border I get 90 days
Image
This is the best photo I could get of my map, that black line heading E/NE off the red line to the NE of La-Un is the 6011 and I reckon it possibly joins the red line east of it

Marco

If you have a proper visa, ie tourist/Non Immigrant the 15 day rule doesnt apply, you will get 60 or 90 days depending on your visa type. I did a visa run in Mae Sot/Myawaddy on 21st january and got 90 days so I am okay until 21st april, as I may stay until 29th april I will do a free visa run into Malaysia and this will see me right through

Alright Captain

In Krabi now...... Looking at the map. 4091 not marked. You said its a new road.

I was planning to head up to the 415 and get a taste of Khao Sok, then head west on the 401 to the main road up to Ranong.

I like the look of your roads big boy....... But I am not tallying on my map. Where are the turnoffs again?

And before the guvnor beats me up for plundering without contributing....... I have shot video and will do edits for the site. I can't do words and photos. I do words and photos for my job...... But video reports I am putting together....... Not that they are any good mind you!

Very best

Dan

Dan the 4091 is about 28 km north of Ranong, it is on maps but obviously not on yours, you take a right just as you start to cross the river. If you look at the photo of my map just below the number 10 and where it says Ranong in big letters there is a yellow road going south east off of hwy 4, this is the 4091

You spending any time in Songkhla 30 kms down the road?...... That place is an under rated gem.

I did the 401 today...... Stunning.... Looks like north of Mae Sot or even sections of Route 13 in Laos..... Limestone and mountains. Very nice.

Yes.... Hat Yai is pants....... Very pushy.

Songkhla is very nice indeed.

401 is the road that takes you through Khao Sok and into Takua Pa on reuniting with the 4......

Its a through road from Surat essentially. Main road but still very beautiful.

And if you are in Songkhla..... Head to the 'corner bar'

The boss is a drunken but dedicated motorcyclist from Aberdeen called Tam.

Nice gaff..... Very friendly.

Colin...... What a fun drive that road is. Really enjoyed it. Taking time around the Andaman side has been a bit of a treat in general. Even the sections of Highway 4 around Ranong were superb..... Maybe I was lucky with the traffic.

Highway 4 around Ranong is great, no problems with it until you get to Chumphon, then youve got all the traffic coming up on the 41 joining it
