On this thread list your fave Guesthouses / Restaurants / Night Spots ........that you use & like to hang out at.
CHIANG MAI
1. The Kafe 127-9 Moon Muang Road. Tel 053212717
FROM TROPICAL JOHN on 24 Jan 2007
CHIANG MAI
Fish'n Chip Shop, 25/4 Ratchavithee Road, almost opposite Irish U.N. pub. Elle and I went there most mornings for breakfast, the 2 weeks we were in CNX. Bottomless tea and coffee, have pc there so can use internet for free. Open for brekkie 6am (ideal if making early start), open 8am Sundays.
CHIANG DAO
1. Kurt and Mons 053 388 011 great nites stay, and free internet 190 baht a nite (I think), they only have 2 rooms so best to book in advance, closed wednesday.
2. Resort run by Dutch guy. (His card all in Thai) Turn Left at side of MP gas station, on left going north through town. 053 388 255 Stayed here 1 nite, the Dutch guy, has about 5 brand new bungalows, 250 baht a nite. He even came out to main road to show us way in. Great Place.
FROM TOMO ON 25 Jan 2007
JONADDA GUEST HOUSE - Central Chiang Mai (just round the corner from the Kafe!).
Rooms are clean and pleasant and the rates are competitive. Beds we had were comfy and the optional food excellent.
We weren't pressured to take any trekking tours but they will arrange and guarantee rooms when you return.
John is a characterful Aussie who went out of his way to help us - he straight off gave us a lift down to Tony's in his recently built chair outfit to pick up some bikes and then lent us full face lids from his own collection! He can ride a bit too....!!
You have to take your chances on room availability as there is no booking system but there are quite a few rooms.
I look forward to returning.
FROM CAPT SLASH on 26 Jan 2007
Chiang MaiMiguels, absolute top notch Mexican food
UN Irish Pub, the best English breakfast in town with real sausages
FROM CAPT SLASH on 2 Feb 2007
Uttaradit
Numchai Hotel, 140 Baht, on Baromart road
New York is a nice restaurant in a soi opposite the hotel, owned by a German who does nice T bone steaks, I had a 500 gramme one today with a large plate of fries for 299 Baht
FROM CAPT SLASH ON 11 Feb 2007
Mae Hong Son
Salween River Restaurant
Crossroads Restaurant
FROM Robin Holmes on 28 Feb 2007

Nothing I can say to do this place justice. Friendly comfortable good food and home baked bread.
FROM cARSON ON 24 March 2007
Chiang Dao: Mon and Kurt's Restaurant.
I highly recommend these folks. I used them as a base camp while exploring the day and overnight loops described in the many posts on this board.
Mon speaks excellent English and is invaluable in writing translations from Thai to English or English to Thai. Kurt speaks German and their place serves as the local hangout for German speaking expats. If you are looking for a warm family type atmosphere with clean comfortable rooms wired with high speed internet this place is for you.
If you are passing through add their place as a friendly quick stop for information and good food.
FROM SVEN on 5 Nov 2007
Chiang Rai: Garden House
A really nice guesthouse in Chiang Rai is Garden House (formerly Ya-house), 1,5km west of the main strip/market/bus station. 150 B for a "bungalow" (to storey private small houses with a balcony), a shady, palmy garden and the most dedicated owner I have met. (He offered all kinds of help when I was running around trying to buy a bike)
A totally feel-good place!
Chiang Mai: Siri Ghouse. In Chiang Mai I really have to recommend Siri Guesthouse on Moon Muang Soi 5. An alley down from the traffic, totally new and clean, (to me it was a hotel-room), 200 B. Very quiet! A great coffee shop just across the road with cheap delicius coffeine served gorgeus daughters of a japanese-thai couple. Down the road is Mr. Mechanic, and it's very close to the Kafe.
FROM DAVIDFL on 13 Dec 2007
Just spent a night in Chiang Rai & my fave hotel, the Nimseeseng was booked out, so my riding buddy Mark Rossi in town ahead of me got us into the Sport Inn oposite the Red Rose Hotel for 500 baht a night.
Now it seems to me as if this high season is going to be a good one with hundreds of Bkk Thais touring around in their cars, & rooms might not always be so easy to getfirst up, or without a booking. So I cruised around town a bit checking out the parking situation & noted that the Sabai Inn, just a few hundred metres from the Sport Inn looks similar, but with under cover parking. Might be worth checking out for next time.
FROM DAVIDFL on 13 Dec 2007
Mae Hong Son: Baan Tai. In Mae Hong Son don't miss out on the traditional Thai massage at Baan Thai.
They are the best straight massages in the North of Thailand.
Even Dave Dirty (dlevedag) who thinks he's a bit of an expert now complains that I've ruined his massages in North Thailand - introduced him to Baan Thai in MHS! Nothing rates compared to what you get at the Baan Thai. Check it out anytime you are on the MHS Loop!
FROM FRANZ EASTERN SEABOARD on 13 Dec 2007
Chiang Mai: Euang Peung Janpah
Northern Thai Restaurant Chiang Mai: Euang Peung Jan Pah, on Cholpratan Road - Nimmanhaemind Road Side, between Suthep and Huay Kaew Roads just where the big carpark is. Greatest northern Thai food, in the early hours have an "unplugged band", later on 2 different Thai bands with good music. Use to go there since 10 years and still eat out there. Cannot find it: 0-5340 0505, green sign outside.
Another Northern Thai Restaurant without band but with great food: Phet Doi Ngahm, on both sides of the southern ring road, between the Hang Dong and Sarapee junctions.
Famous small northern Thai Restaurant with Local celebrities: Mai Muang on Mae Rim Road, just before the BAY Bank on the left side. Great local traditional music (guitar/flute) with even greater northern Thai food.
FROM DLEVEDAG on 15 Dec 2007
Thanks Dave -- I am a expert.
The massage at Baan Thai Massage (MHS) is the best by far. Thanks again / and damn you for turning me onto them. Not once did they hurt me ( despite popular thai belief, pain in massage is not a sign of a good job). They really pay attention to you and what they are doing. The atmosphere is right too, dim lights, soft music, smells good. It just makes all other massages look weak.
There is one place in CM thats OK. Chiang Mai Traditional Massage. (100bt =hour). Private clean rooms and coffee/tea. They have many ladies, so find one that right for you and then ask for her by name next time.
Its nothing compared to Bann Thai, but when you're in CM its the next best thing. Plus its only 100bt a hour!! Take 2 for sure.
Located past the Y-intersection on the Night Bazaar Rd (Heading South). Right Side, small white sign, down a little alley/lot

IN CHIANG SAEN
Yet another big thumbs up for the Khrua Chiang Saen Restaurant.
Excellent value for money, superb food, big servings low prices.
River side on the 'Khong, opposite Gin's Ghouse at the Golden Triangle end of town!
The Happy Go Lucky Girlfriend singer, who knows her food, insisted we eat there again. And we did last night: huge fish, fresh fresh vegies & tasty spicy Thai salads. And very inexpensive. Check it out. Highly recommended! _________________ Davidfl

Hi guys,
Just wanted to let you know that the prices for our Place (on and Kurt's Restaurant and Guesthouse) and Cees Place have changed a little.
Our room is now 250 Baht per night and still includes water at night and free brewed coffee in the morning. It is now a little suite with two nice sofa chairs, a sitting area outside the room and private bathroom with hot shower
Cee's Bungalows now all have satelite TV and are 300 Baht per night
Numerous guesthouses and Western restaurants have sprung up during the past year in Chiang Dao, which makes it a nice place to use for a base, when exploring Northern Thailand by motorcycle.
The road to Chiang Dao, from Chiang Mai, is nearly completed and all paved now. _________________ Come visit us sometime at Mon and Kurt's Restaurant in Chiang Dao

IN PHAYAO
1. Hotel: Phu Thong Place. 500 baht a night. Excellent value for money.
2. Krua Thep Pub & Restaurant for great 70s-80s pop-rock music. Good food, staff & service.
3. Lakeview Pub. Good atmosphere & nice jazzy Thai music. Brilliant young lead guitarist & singer Mr Bird with the band Talents. They've also got a little 4 foot nothing female singer Floyd, (as in Pink Floyd.) Highly recommended for a cool night out.
Pix below from the Lakeview....
The crowd at the Lakeview is younger student orientated, compared to the mature adult players at the Krua Thep. Hit both in a night, I do. _________________ Davidfl

Yes, we totally agree. Had a great time at Krua Thep Pub & Restaurant, in Phayao. We always stop there when we pass through on the bike.
They have a good selection of blues CD's, too. _________________ Come visit us sometime at Mon and Kurt's Restaurant in Chiang Dao
