In Phonsavan I like the Nice Guest House.
Its cheap $8 per night, has very warm beds, the water in the shower is hot, cable TV from Vietnam. only problem is the walls are thin so you hear everything going on. They also speak English. Its located on the main road into town just past the MAG office. There's off street parking and the gate is closed at night. Tel. 061 312454 |

MI THUNA Restaurant and Guesthouse.
Ralph in Khamoune now has two rooms ready at his guest house. You might think eating Euro food in Laos is a cop out but after a long day's ride doing the Thakek Loop a steak and comfort food can't be beet.
Ring ahead to book and order dinner. TEL 020 2240182.
Get there soon while Tony the monkey is still a baby and very cute.
Ralph's place is on Highway 8 at Ban Na Hin on the road to Lax Sao near the Theun Hin Boun Power Station. |

| Can anyone recommend a place where the walls aren't too thin or where you can get a private bungalow relatively cheap during August in either Vietienne or (especially) Luang Prabang? |

Vientiane Massage
If you are looking for a pukka proper massage try fellow GT-Rider's
Papaya Spa in Vientiane.
Just the answer after a few hard days riding.
The owner, a serious off road rider, he writes on this board under the name Jean-Louis Papaya.

Found a good guesthouse in Vientiane (after too many crappy ones), called Chindamay Guest House, on Sihom Road, BanHaiSok. It's west of the strip, just where Th Setthatirat starts. (A Y-junction with a tiny gas-station, where Luang Prabang Rd meets a smaller sideroad). 6 dollar for a fairly new, fairly clean room with nice big bed and the best toilet I have seen for a long time.
E-mail: chindamayph@yahoo.com, tel (856) 21 262125.

In Vientiane, the new hot spot on the 'Khong at sunset is the Mekong Deck, right behind PVO Motorcycle rental.
Great views, cheap beer & fantastic spare ribs for drink snacks. _________________ Davidfl

Not quite a tip, but 3 days ago got "stung" at the Phousi 1 Guesthouse in Luang Prabang.
Our original rooms bookings were US$20 a night, down from US$25 a night because we were not interested in the breakfast.
What a surprise then when checking out after 5 days, that the room rate was suddenly US$30 a night.
After complaining, they explained we could have the room for US$25 as indeed we had not had any breakfasts, and that the reason for the higher tariff was that we had been given the wrong room & had stayed in a more expensive room - so had to pay more.
Not impressed at all!
We reluctantly paid up, but in Luang Prabang make sure you avoid the Phousi 1 guesthouse, or if you do stay there - pay in advance when you check in, so that there are no touch ups & scamming. _________________ Davidfl

In Vientiane stumbled across the Seng Dao Book Store
- a great place for music CDs & DVDs.
All chinese copies but well worth the money & a visit if you're at all interested.
