A google search using words "minsk russia motorcycles" will get you heaps of photos. For the price, Minsk are unbeatable value for money. A brand new one can be had for about $600USD in Hanoi. Or imported direct from a factory in Belrusia for about $380USD. They are, in a sentence, cheap and nasty but as strong as Tanks. The only prob I had with my Minsk in Vietnam was Vibration. Like seriously! Over a long distance (say 1000 kms) at top speed the engine virtually vibed its way out of the frame. But thats what happens when you push a 125cc to its limits I geuss. However, I only had 12 days to get from Hanoi to HCMC. I was making time.
Good luck with it all! |

I've ridden a Minsk all the way from Hanoi to Ho Chi Min city (and up to Ba Be National Park north of Hanoi). I bought the bike in Hanoi for $300 (old shape) and gave it away in Ho Chi Min 1.5months later to a viet who wanted to use it to start a taxi service. Most of the drive was done on highway 1 but the last part from Hoi An I headed up into the mountains along the Ho Chi Min rd. It was an amzing adventure and landed up in places you would never get to without a bike! Would I do it again? I think next time I would not be so lucky!! Came off by the Cambodian border by Yok Don National Park (beautiful scar to show for it!) and broke down 10 times + (once my whole chain boke off) but thanks to the simplicity of the bike was always back on the road in no time. Watch out for mud/rain/sand/night driving/on-coming traffic/rice on the road/other bikes/trucks/no road rules as I almost died under all these circumstances! I have pics if you want just e-mail me.
Cheers Ol. |

I've ridden a Minsk in Vietnam for a year and a half - they're beasts of bikes! Prone to popping the spark plug unexpectedly but they can go anywhere. You can find photos on the web of the Taliban haring across the desert on Minsks with robes flying behind them and AK47's mounted on the front...
Can you get them in Thailand? I'm about to take up a job in Chiang Mai for a year and wondering what bikes you guys ride there??
Cheers, Jess |
