Hi Jim. Can I rent a bike from Houei Xai to Vientiane just one way only? How much it will cost if I take 4 days trip? Thanks.
nothing to hurry, just slow and steady
Hi Zain,
Best to email me but for your question:
It's not cheap but possible to send a bike to Houie Xai, less expensive to send to Luang Namtha. 4 days ride to VTE is a real rushed trip but can be done - not a lot of fun but can be done.
Bike to Houie Xai = USD $ 110
Bike to Luang Namtha = USD $ 85
Daily rate of the bike depending on model, around $ 30 a day.
There are other options on this, send me an email about what you'd like to do and I'll see if I can come up with an alternative that isn't so expensive for you.

Dear Burnjr,we have studied the proposal but we are stucked with time.We need at least 14 days to cover the route. We also plan to travel early January 2010.
Dear Jim,I'll contact you soonest as I still negotiating with my friends. But in principal we agreed to the plan(bike rental from Luang Namtha- Vientiane).

For those looking to arrive in Luang Prabang and hire a bike to ride the mountain parts of route 13, you will need to organise something before you get there.
I arrived thinking that I could sort this out for a cheeky day on route 13, but the only bikes for rent in Luang Prabang are the Honda Dream scooters (or similar). They are also overpriced. I paid 120,000 kip ($15) for one day (morning to afternoon not even 24 hours) and that was the cheapest place I could find in town. And I asked everywhere.
It was still awesome, but would have been so much better on a proper manual bike with some more guts.
Sort it out prior or you will end up like me:
Marty.
well there's nothing wrong with that picture - rain off in the distance is always good. TJ rode a bike like that as well and did it 2 up. I do send bikes to Luang Prabang, Luang Namtha, Pak Beng, Houie Xai and a few other places but do need a little heads up time on them as it takes transit time.
KingMarty - $ 15 is a bit high but if it ran well, not a problem.

Jim,
If I had known I would've been out of luck in Luang Prabang I would have organised a bike to meet me in LP and ridden it down to Vientiane. Ah well, next time.
Yeah it was a great day out, even on the little bike. As for the rain, it didn't stay out in the distance for long! I found why you see all those little bamboo shacks that dot the road.
