My trip expenses are often like Captain Slash's: 'spend little and see a lot', however, in Ranong I stayed at place provides excellent value and will likely appeal to everyone.
The _Le Ranong_ Hotel is new and has been open only a few months. All 24 rooms feature HW, A/C, TV w/ cable, and a large refrigerator (beers 35-40Bt, water free), and are 'non-smoking' but w/ small balconies for smokers. Each room has little amenities usually found in hotels that are far more expensive: HW maker w/ free coffee & Milo, shampoo & soap despensers in the shower, pillows that are soft (not hard as a rock) and quality (not pressed wood) furniture.
Security is excellent for parking cars/bikes, plus keycard entry to the rooms.
Best of all (for me) was the owner is an avid baker and has a restaurant that specializes in desserts/pasteries and the best bread I've had anywhere in Asia! There is a large and excellent Thai restaurant 50-meters away (meals 30-40 Bt), as well as a 7/11 next door to the hotel.

My own private toilet and shower, its only cold water but when I took a shower at 16.00 hours I had to let the water run a long time before it was cool enough to enjoy

I start off with two pieces of chicken massaman and rice
Then have a piece of chicken goring, this was delicious, 30 Baht for the lot

Unfortunately due to a different religion in these parts the finest tasting animal that has ever walked on the planet is absent from the menu, I try some beef (no dont go much on that) then make do with chicken, not as tasty as my normal choice but not too bad

I go to the Tara Regent Hotel at N06.01.362 E101.58.013 and on floor 2 is the massage parlour
Jah was the name of the masseuse, a much needed massage and only 260 Baht for two hours, I found other places and all of them quoted the price for the full two hour course rather than hourly, I guess its different down here

My LP book says Malaysian food is easy to find here but the book needs updating, this looked similar to what I wanted but definitely wasnt the real thing, its was okay though and only 35 Baht. I guess with hindsight I should have just popped over the border for breakfast
