Laos - China border bike crossing update ?

Going to Laos next week and thought I might go into China at Boten if possible. I have my China Visa, anyone know if its possible to get a bike across the border as of late?


Read this already - just wondered if anything has changed....
"Laos / China only at Boten (L) / Mohan (C). However China now refuse entry to bikers without the appropriate travel documents and permits, which have to be issued by the authorities inside China. The exact documentation required is somewhat unclear, but it appears as if you must at least have Chinese vehicle registration, insurance and driving (riding) licence; (plus guide / escort?) and these are not available at the border. This all a bit too tricky - how do you get these on the border, "outside" China. So you can scrub China off your riding list for the time being."

I went to Boten on feb24,2009
Custom+Immigrant men told me that I must have documents from travel agency in my country and issued by Somewhere in Beijing

I' just know that driveindochina.com can issue for it., but i didn't khown about price yet.

I crossed the border at Boten last month on a Chinese plated bike I own, and had no problem. As the customs official there spoke quite good English, I asked him directly if a person with a Chinese visa with a Thai plated bike could enter China. The answer was absolutely not.
This seems to me to be a bit odd, as a new fixture of Laos is to see Chinese guys on Chinese plated bikes touring around Laos. It would only seem reasonable that Laos plated bikes should have the same rights as a Chinese plated bike. Since I suspect China is calling the shots however, I suspect the border is a one way valve..........

I've heard of random Singaporeans headed into China, but in big groups with a guide or something but these are all hearsays..

Yes I've spoken to a Singaporean who did this. Paperworks needs a least 3 months to prepare. And it's pricey. They went all the way up to Kunming and an escort is mandatory.

I don't know, for us here in Thailand we're blocked by Burma and China for overland tours. I am harassing the Chinese embassy as I would like to ride to Russia, then go Europe on a Thai bike. If I ever get an answer I will post it.

Then we have to contact any travel agent in China and they will issue the driving licence,insurance and number registered in China. The agent will wait you at the border and they will make the clearance. Of course this will cost you. If not then the entrance is not permitted. Anybody,please advise.

Yes I believe this is correct. Recently in Muang Lay, Norhern Vietnam I met a group of guys from Penang who said they had ridden in China a couple of times. They claimed it was possible to set it up with the guide & escort not to follow you, but just check in with them every night to confirm where you were & that everything was ok. But you still had to pay for the package.
The group from Penang was lead by Joey, who I'm sure you can track down.
Joey also says hello to Robet H from his Penang friends who helped sort Robert out for Sumatra.

Might it be worth to consider buying a bike inside China, it would save a lot of trouble or not????
On the downside you'll get a 125cc only, there are a few bigger ones like Lifan, and a few Choppers up to 250cc, but chinese make.
This beauty I got for 6800 RMB, it's a Honda, I rode ca 7500 KM without any problems in Shandong province. Registration an insurance was done in one day for 160+120 RMB on the name of the shop owner. However in Nanjing I had problems to find somebody willing to sell me a bike in their name.
