The KTM's are finally here. And we Love it!

    Saturday, January 30 2010 @ 07:04 AM ICT

    Contributed by: news
Motorcycle NewsThe wait for the KTM motorcycle models, one of the most awaited motorcycle names in Thailand, was finally over as Kunka Corp. pulled off the sheets from the KTM models amidst flashes of camera men. Most bikes clad in the typical KTM orange, the KTM's proudly showed off there Austrian attitude to the journalists present at the 2nd Bangkok Motorbike Festival.

The KTM's are powered with engines from 654cc, 999cc, and the extremely powerful 1195cc engines. With models like the popular KTM 690 Enduro, KTM 690 SMC supermoto, KTM 990 Supermoto T, KTM 690 Duke, KTM 990 Superduke, KTM 990 Adventure, and the superbike range from the KTM 1190 RC8 to the KTM 1190 RC 8 R Akrapovic special edition.

The distributor have claimed that the KTM owners will have complete service backup from the time of sale and that the spare parts are already available and present at the service location.

The KTM motorcycles line-up, a motorcycle name I personally love to ride, are undoubtedly brilliant performers. But all good things come at a cost and the KTM's showed at the motorshow are no exception. With KTM price tags starting at 644,000 Baht for the KTM 690 Enduro, and ending at 1,550,000 Baht for the KTM 1190 RC8 R Akrapovic superbike, the KTM's are undoubtedly expensive. But who cares when you have a motorcycle that rides like a KTM 1190 RC8?

For everybody who wants to enjoy the Austrian experience the KTM's are still on display at CenterWorld Bangkok until tomorrow (31 January) but do not expect Austrian beer, they serve Heineken. For prices you can look at our KTM pricelist.
A truly happy rider is one who can enjoy the scenery along a detour.

Looking at the price list they are no worse than HDs and look at how many new HDs for over 1m baht get sold each year , this week alone there are 4 new HDs in Pattaya 2 cost over 1.6m all bought by Farangs . At least 100 NEW hDsa re sold each year in Thailand and another 200 gray import second hand bikes are sold most are low mileage late models too.

Honeslty , i did not expect much different prices . Main problem here is importing Bikes is so darn expensive on taxes...Kawasaki did make a nice move to manufacture the er6's here and can offer bikes in a lower pricerange now. Still i want my KTM but need to wait a bit

Cambodia taxes not as high as Thailand

49.5% of invoice value on a brand new bike and 39.5% of customs book value on a used bike.

Back of the envelope I reckon I could import a new 690 from USA to Cambo for ~USD15k all up. (based on USD9K for new 690 in US)

Tax on a low kilometer/demo model would attract the lower customs book value tax which is USD2200 x 39.5% for a used 690.
All up that would total around USD10k to bring one over. (based on USD8k for low km-used/demo model).

Just bought another DRZ and set it all up so I wont persue the KTM for while

Just to correct something guys I think you will find it has been the 690 and 660 KTM's dominating the Dakar rally not the 990 or its predecessor the 950

    Hi Big and Tall,

I always thought KTM stood for " Kick Till Monday " .

You never said anything about the engine mods on your 525?? Cheers, hope to see you on a ride again.

Back in the states now Harry so I'll send you an email with questions regarding your GiantLoop bag order.

The KTM has a few things done to the motor (570 bigbore, High RPM Hotcams cam, lightened flywheel) but in hindsight I would not bother with them again. The mods were done because I was going to Supermotard it a lot with Lukes XR 650 and figured I needed all the motor I could get to try and keep Luke in site. In Thailand the offroading does not lend itself to really let the 525 stretch its legs. However the sand in Northern Cambodia enabled me to unleash the bike and get it on the main jet proper. Fun stuff.

Glad to see KTM coming to Thailand as their bikes fill niches that other manufacturers are ignoring and which a lot of riders find interesting. I rode the 690 and that motor pulled nice with just a little snatchiness off the bottom. None of the previous models LC-4 vibes at all, thankfully. My 525 would top out in dirt gearing at about 155 KPH and Frank and his 690 would then come roaring by. I reckon a 690 with motard and dirt rims would be a nice do it all bike for over here.

Harry I'll be back once ski season winds down and gagging for some riding, so if you're game let me know. Always up for a fun trip with friends.

Another KTM acronym if you remember Harri once we crossed the border into Pailin; K-eep T-owing M-an, and K-eep T-he M-echanic
    Cheers all.

So did KTM ever have their demo day down in Bangkok?

If so how did it pan out for them?
    Cheers all.

Does anyone have any news//updates such as: did they already deliver a first one to any customer, is a service center already set up, do they already have spares and trained technicians, any address, any website ?? Again, a big mediaflash and then just quiet ........If you google you still got the Phuket website by this farang guy who doesn't find it necessary to update, answer emails or cancel the site and on the other hand no website by Kunka on the new KTM setup in Thailand. Also did Justin get no answer to the question above. Thanks for any reply.....Franz

At the display at the Bangkok Motorbike Show they said they were going to open a KTM showroom on Petchaburi Road, but I can't recall if they gave an opening date...
Maybe tomorrow I'll drive down that way and see if I can spot anything.
    Happy Trails!

The showroom is open in Bangkok and they are selling bikes. I notice that the website (http://www.kunkacorp.com) is down. Assume they'll get it back up soon?
