    Chiang Rai Accommodation

A really nice guesthouse in Chiang Rai is Garden House (formerly Ya-house), 1,5km west of the main strip/market/bus station. 150 B for a "bungalow" (to storey private small houses with a balcony), a shady, palmy garden and the most dedicated owner I have met. (He offered all kinds of help when I was running around trying to buy a bike)
    A totally feel-good place!
Funny we should be staying at another of Sven's suggestions on the same trip. Price is now 200B, but I have to agree with Sven's comments.

However, we found the place not clean, the hot water not working and no fly screens on the windows. The mossies are big and hungry, but by keeping the windows closed and through the liberal use of weapons of mass destruction we got a good night's sleep without being eaten. We moved the next day.

If the owner installed fly screens, sealed the gaps in the walls and kept the place clean it would be excellent, at least when it's not raining.

    We moved to:

    Orchids GH
    1012/3 JEDYOD ROAD, MUANG, CHIANGRAI

    GPS N19 54.267 E99 49.912

It completely lacks the atmosphere (and the mossies!) of Garden House. More like a two storey motel. Doubles with AC and bath are 250B. Clean, friendly and comfortable. Bikes were parked in the yard in front of the downstairs units, under an overhanging roof. I think there is a night guard, but I didn't verify this.

Walking distance to the clock tower and ST Motorcycles.

Unless somebody can recommend something better (hard at this price) I will stay there again.

    Sabai Inn - Chiang Rai

    CHIANG RAI
Arrived late 6.30PM & thought that a room at the Nimseeseng would be doubtful without a booking, so decided to check out another hotel I thought would be good value for money.

The Sabai Inn. 350 baht a night. Free WiFi.

Not sure about the paint job in the bathroom

but with a huge car park & ground floor rooms there's no need to lug your gear up 'n down elevators / stairs.
Also if you get a front room, you can watch your bike from the window.
Indeed the Sabai Inn will be my future Chiang Rai hotel favourite.

    Sport Inn

A late start to Chiang Rai & took a chance on not booking. Both the Nimseeseng & The Sabai Inn were full.
Just around the corner from the Sabai Inn,

Sport Inn is a good choice indeed, just checked out from there. Comfortable beds, not rock hard as usual in Thailand. Not too much nose early in the morning like in many others.(Maybe just lucky).

Choose Sport Inn over Sabai Inn, as the pictures show double bed in Sport Inn.
There is a bar attached (Terraz or similar) with decent live music, I spotted this too late, I had already bought my SangSom from 7 nearby.

Another place I used to stay is Jansom House for 450-500 bath a night. Off street parking and night guard, right next to Wat JetYod. This is in easy walking distance to the night bazar, and of course JetYod rd. Rooms are rather small, and the breakfast you can forget about, but it good reviews in Lonely Planet.
