Laos: 6 Days North; loop via Pak Beng or loop via Phongsali?

Hi guys,

I am planning a 6 day trip through Northern Laos starting from Luang Prabang. My question is whether we should choose a loop via the West or via the North-East?

The North-east looks a bit more appealing (more remote), but I fear that that might also result in a predetermined route, without the ability to wander off the main road (and hence a lot of boring asphalt...rather than dirt). Is this fear valid?

Any suggestions welcome.

You will find both tarmac and dirt roads which ever way you go - I would suggest you turn off the main roads and get lost - this way you will always find the best places !
