CAN THO - Cai Rang & Phong Dien

Can Tho is splattered all over the travel guide books - we were fearful to be heading to a town we knew would be inundated with tourists, all carrying & blindly following their guide-book (you know the one).

We took Hwy 80 from Rach Gia before swinging down the 91 which borders the Hau Giang River. Still looking to see the seas of emerald greens signifying rice growing country we were once more confronted by the struggle currently faced by so many in the Delta, the daily battle against the flooding sweeping the area.

Its a joy though to be back in a countryside where people live in a world of water - where boats, markets even houses go about life whilst floating along the multitude of rivers, estuaries, tributaries, streams & canals. Riverside towns, fruits of every known varity, smiling faces peering from beneath conical hats everywhere.....its marvellous

Some shots of life around Can Tho............

That Can Tho finds itself as one of the Great Hits of Vietnam is, of course, its floating markets - primarily Cai Rang & Phong Dien (the later of which we far preferred). I'll let the photos do the talking............

Crabs atop the boat's pole, rather than signifying it has crab to sell, are so set to seek a good catch & safety for the boat & all who sail upon her:
