ICONIC motorcycle producer Triumph roared ahead with record sales in 2009,helping it to overtake Kawasaki to become the fourth largest bike brand in the UK.
Triumph, which was first established in 1902 and is based in Hinckley, Leicestershire, increased sales on its home soil by 25pc in 2009 to 7,450.
The manufacturer finished the year strongly, outselling all its rivals in November and trailing Japanese giant Honda by just one bike in December in the UK sector for the motorcycles with engines bigger than 500cc.
In the space of 12 months Triumph's market share of the UK 500vv+ market has increased from 9.2pc to 13pc. It has been helped by the strong performance of its Daytona 675, which notched a sales increase of more than 50pc following the model's winning performance on the racetrack.
Triumph claimed the UK sales trend has been mirrored around the world.
The performance is all the more remarkable when set against the backdrop of a global recession that has led to a 10pc fall in Britain's large capacity motorbike market.
