I will cross from Thailand into Laos via Chiang Khong to Huay Xai on my bike. My question is,Can I get my Laos visa at the border or must I get it somewhere in Thailand? Any info on this subject would be great. Thanks

Yes, no problem. You will cross on the car ferry and do your customs paperwork where you get off the boat. Then, you will go all the way to the top of the ramp, turn right and go into town.

Immigration is at the small passenger boat ramp. It is a little difficult to see, just watch down the small roads leading to the river once in town. There is usually a lot of people and congestion in that area. Walk down to the river and you will see immigration. Be sure to bring a couple photos with you for the visa.

Here is a Google Earth Pic. Customs is at the Ferry Dock. According to GE it is 1.09 Kilometers from the top of the ramp to Immigration.
