| Unregistered Motorcycle Insurance Cover in ThailandMotorcycle insurance - for unregistered bikes: 3rd Party Compulsory, 3rd Party Voluntary!
3rd party insurance is compulsory in Thailand, but there is a challenge to overcome if your bike does not have a registration plate - e.g. it is "technically illegal" for it to be on the road. The solution is the Road Accident Victims Protection Co Ltd who will issue 3rd Party Compulsory Insurance for unregistered motorcycles.
Once you have 3rd Party Compulsory Cover sorted out, other insurance companies will then issue you with Voluntary 3rd Party cover.
The Process You will require the following documentation;
The fee is 645 baht, and you are issued with a receipt and a rather frail piece of paper in a plastic wallet to "show the police" in the event of an accident.
1.) COMPULSORY 3RD PARTY COVERAGE
Road Accident Victims Protection Co Ltd Insurance Location: RVP is on the Superhighway (Chiang Mai–Lampang Rd) on the left if you are travelling west towards Doi Suthep. It is on the same side as Tesco Lotus Supermarket Kamthieng. Approx 700 meters past Lotus there is a 7/11 Mini Mart (still on the left side). RVP is two doors past the 7/11 and looks more like a salon than an insurance office :-) The young lady who looked after me spoke basic English and was very helpful. No questions, accepted the handwritten receipt and the chassis / engine number tracings, copied my passport and took 650 baht off me :-) Process took less than 10 minutes, she explained which side was the receipt, and which side was to "show police" :-)
Once you have that all done, get the 'policy' scanned or photographed as this will be required if you want to go to the next level of Voluntary 3rd Party, and /or Comprehensive Insurance. Click the link for - Insurance Quote Request Form - add your details, including mention of the unregistered but Compulsory 3rd Party Insurance status. You will be asked to fax / email the insurance details.
