250 models cancelled and also other confusing news from triumph

Triumph have built 2 new factories over last 3 years , one in India is able to build up to 300,000 bikes a year and a new plant in Thailand, factory 4 has also been built , both to make the new 250 models.

Today it has been announced that the 250 models are to be cancelled !!!!

the india factory is only making a few thousand bikes a year for India market and the thai 250cc plant has not made a single bike???!!

The new 250cc model have been cancelled

Some of this came from MCN and other bits from indian business sources

reason triumph have given is equally confusing ,, apparently the Thai market is now oversubscribed for 250cc models ... and that triumph are not competetive in this market ??? thats very confusing as they spent £9m setting up the plant in Thailand and another £58m on the India plant ,,, very bizarre financials as that does not even count the at least £4.8m spent on 250 development ??

word is that they are still hamstrung in thailand by not having same deal as Ducati,Honda and kawasaki and so the bikes are classed as imports even though made here ,, thats totally mad if they actually went ahead and built all the new plant without a new BOI duty agreement in place and also does not explain the vast under utilised Indian plant ????

As triumph is privately owned company its possible that john bloor is using it all as a tax loss on his booming property business or that more UK production of big bikes may be offshored ????

May be they can sell these state of the art factories to rivals maybe thats the plan who knows ????

meanwhile triumph remain expensive in thailand and not good value .

Sad, but you can totally understand it.

In Thailand we have the:

z250/300
Ninja 300
CBR286
Kawa N250SL
Kawa Z250SL
Benelli 300
KLX250
D-T250
CRF250
CRF250M
Duke 200.
Throw in a Lifan or two.

All cheap with tax breaks Triumph wouldn't have, besides the Duke which is stupidly expensive compared to the others, but in fairness they went ahead with it.

So what is the factory going to be tuned to turn out now? Let the rumours begin. :D

Shame as a 250 street single would have been awesome.

It's long overdue for Triumph to strike a tax deal with Thai govt.. Especially now that so many other manufacturers have. They are a perfectly good motorcycle. I liked my Bonneville but when it came time for thinking of a change, a Triumph was a no/no. For the price of one Bonnie I could buy 3+ Honda CB500X. No contest. Honda is also a good motorcycle & I'm very pleased with it. Cost of parts for Triumph are also in cloud cuckoo land here. Whether a 250 Triumph (competatively priced or otherwise) would have caught on in Thailand or anywhere else for that matter - I do have my doubts.

A bit like the KTM Duke 200, it would certainly have been a small, overpriced, niche market.

None of it makes sense to me ,, the crux of the matter is that once again Triumph dont seem to be able to strike a tax deal with Thai government even though they have examples from Ducati, Kawasaki, etc and also now have 4 factories ???? it beggars belief ....If the Bonnie was 450k it would sell OK here

they also have a new Brasil plant too as well as the mega Indian factory .

Perhaps, just perhaps, there are differences of opinions in terms of the envelope size that it would take to strike that deal.

I have heard that Triumph BOI has been given! More Dealerships will be added and Prices coming down to match other Brands. This will happen soon probably in the New Year. Triumph are not in Financial Difficulty! They are Possibly doing better than nearly all Bike Manufacturers over the last couple of Years!

^ I believe you are correct Ian. It's not that Triumoh couldn't renegotiate their BOI agreement, rather they simply chose not to as Thailand wasn't considered a significant market. But as we all know, the market has changed a lot in recent years. Seems Triumph may finally be coming around!

I never stated that Triumph have money problems ,, from what I hear they are doing well but , the 250 cancellation after building the india mega factory and another thai plant is odd.

I do hope they have renegotiated BOI as they make some interesting bikes ,,,,
