Above: the Sunday Night Market, Chiang Mai

Many towns across Thailand have a night market, often Saturday night, and an area designated as a "walking street" that is closed to all traffic in the late afternoon. By 5pm, stall holders are flat out preparing their shelters, display tables and food stalls.

In most instances these markets cater primarily to "local" customers, which means authentic local foods, snacks and sweets are available. Such markets are an excellent place to wander and mingle with the townsfolk...

If you are planning a trip around the northern Thailand provinces, knowing when and where to find a night market may well add an extra dimension to your travel experience.

[format=h2]Kad Kong Ta Street Market - Lampang[/format]

Kat Kong Ta, or Talat Cheen, is an old market in Lampang, located near Ratsada Pisek Bridge. The name Kat Kong Ta means "the market near the pier" (Kat is a market and Kong Ta means a pier.) Situated on the bank of Wang River, the market dates back to the reign of King Rama V in about 1877.

In the old days, Kat Tong Ka was bustling with merchants from Thailand, China, Myanmar, which contributed to the diverse architectural styles in the streets around the market. There are Thai Lanna, Burmese, Chinese, and western architectures dating back a century. Buildings are preserved and passed on to following generations, ensuring that Kat Tong Ka Market retains its lovely classic atmosphere which in turn attracts many visitors.

Besides the architecture, Kat Tong Ka Market offers a wide range of interesting local and handmade products. Food stalls offer delicious local dishes such as Kanom Cheen Nam Ngew, Miang Kham, Khai Pam, and Thong Muan Sod.

Kat Tong Ka opens from around 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

[format=h2]Chiang Rai Saturday Night Walking Street Market[/format]

The Saturday Night Walking Street Market is located on Thanalai Road in the city centre. Starting at a round 5pm, it is within easy walking distance of the 7 days per week Night Bazaar. The Walking Street Market runs for about a kilometer along Thanalai Road - which is closed to cars from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. There are a lot of local foods on offer, various stalls selling handmade products, handicrafts, souvenirs and even Thai massage. Basically, its a great place for shopping, eating and relaxing.

Note that there is both a weekly Walking Street Market and a Night Bazaar which has a food court area along side.
