Hi Friends,

Confortable installed at the wheel of my car driving on Phetkasem between Bangkok and Hua Hin, I am often passed by mopeds ridden by teens runing at more than 130/140 Km/h ??? !!!

These bikes are supposed to be 125 or 150 cc. but what is their secret(s) I really wonder ? Could someone explain me a bit more the modifications they do on their mopeds ?

-Exhaust ?
-Air filter ?
-Thin wheels ?
-Carb ?

I have difficulties to imagine these teens spending crazy money in cost full big bore conversion kits ? What would be the trick ?

Thanks for your help to make me understand, I am quite perplex on it.

Keep on the Power !

Hi Azoulay

I am also curious - I've been out on the highway cruising at 110 kph and been overtaken with ease by kids on noisy scooters... I've also been in traffic leaving Chiang Mai and been horrified at scooters zooming and weaving through 3 lanes at insane speeds.

Whatever they do to those bikes results in incredible power and acceleration - pulling wheelies with ease, as well as top end speed. Kind of reminds me of single cylinder versions of those lethal old Kawasaki Triples known to many as the “spaghetti-framed death machines”...

My first Scooter was in Phuket in 1991. A Suzuki Crystal 100cc. I had it painted Bright Yellow and got it worked on at some Thai shop. He did 150km/h on it but I only got up to around 130. Was really quick but wasn't very economical Ha Ha! Cost tiny money in those days to hot them up! I was doing an event in Bangkok years ago and every night We used to sit at a local Restaurant by the main road and watch the illegal Drag racing going on. I saw a Yamaha Mio leave a NSR250 Honda in it's dust. That was really quick. He used to just power stand whenever He wanted!

Kwak triples were know as the widow maker in UK
A long time ago I nearly bought the 350, but saw sense & got a Honda CB500-4 instead. These Thai kids can get some speed from their scoots. Our 125 Wave would show 120 kph on the clock, the 110 that replaced it about 100. Put a Thai kid on weighing about 30 kilos dripping wet, add thin wheels & tyres = deadly!
