I am a 55 year old Australian and thinking of retiring to Thailand.

Does anyone have a recommendation or personal experience on what is the best insurance company to take out an annual policy with as an Expat ? ...............this is for living in Thailand on a full-time basis including riding motorbikes.

And yes I have an appropriate drivers license (both Thai & Australian)

The company (TID) that I use for my regular trips to Thailand do not offer an annual policy..........I have never had a claim with them but a friend I was with had a claim, only a small incident where he came off his bike in Chiang Mai, TID were great and reimbursed his hospital costs as soon as he returned to Australia.

We have our own GTR Group Insurance policy that covers you for motorbike riding + SOS Emergency Medical Evacuation from overseas.
Get in before you are 60 & you can stay in, plus when you hit 60 the premiums don't go up because it is a group policy.
Take a look here
GT Rider Motorcycle / Health Insurance

No medical examination.
Just complete the application form with a health statement, pay your money & you are covered.

The policy comes from here
บริษัท ไทยประกันสุขภาพ จำกัด (มหาชน) :: Thai Health Insurance Public Company Limited

I am under Plan 6, Premium which is 34,038 Baht a year.

what happens if you are over 60 ???

Getting insurance over 60 is an issue - it costs money & the premiums sore.
You should try to get yourself covered before 60. There are policies where you can start after 60, but you must declare any pre existing conditions,
With the GTR policy I understand you can stay in until 65, when policies are reviewed by Thai Health, but it looks like they may not be renewed, although it maybe possible to stay covered until 70. We have not tested the upper limit out yet, although some of us are getting close. The first response I have is 65 is the limit & the individual membership will be reviewed before renewal.

This is a "cheap" option for starting over 60, but you must join before 65
บริษัท ไทยประกันสุขภาพ จำกัด (มหาชน) :: Thai Health Insurance Public Company Limited

" Eligible to apply for the first year coverage from 15 days up to 65 years of age, renewable up to 80 years of age for IPD and up to 70 years of age for OPD.."

In general most policies seem to run out at 65/70, and you must get in before 60. The exceptions are costly, but there doesn't seem to be a way around that, unless you want to take your chances & hopefully pass away peacefully of old age, give up riding & stay home.

I hope this is a help sorting through the maze of old age health insurance.

I'm not the expert, for more info try the broker looking after the policy

Well it hasn't actually become law yet, but I reckon if you can show that you have an ongoing one year health insurance policy, then you should be ok.
When you are a member you receive a Membership Card certifying your policy & health insurance coverage.
However in this country you never quite now until the day it comes, because everything is constantly changing; but you shouldn't hang out here, ride motorbikes & not have some sort adequate insurance -= get yourself covered.

I agree and always intended to get insurance, and now I have, I went with the GTR group policy Plan 6, I had travel insurance for the 1st month to give me some time so I could look into it.

Signing up was a straight forward process, just fill out the paperwork and nominate the start date you would like the insurance to commence. I have a couple of pre existing medical conditions so they have put an exemption on them, not a problem.

Sairung was a pleasure to deal with, my card arrived today from Bangkok
