A good long soak in a steaming thermal pool is Mother Nature's ultimate gift to a tired body, aches and pains and built-up tension. The thrmal wonders of New Zealand, Japan, Iceland etc are world-renowned, but that such things exist in tropical Thailand is perhaps less well known! How many hot springs in North Thailand are there? Our research came up with a surprising list of over 30 hot springs in Thailand, all but 2 are in the northern provinces. The list so far;

Hot Springs in Northern Thailand

Hot Springs in Chiang Rai province

Hot Springs in Chiang Mai province

Hot Springs in Mae Hong Son province

Hot Springs in Phrae province

Hot Springs in Nan province

Hot Springs in Lampang province

Hot Springs in Tak province

Central Thailand: Hot Springs in Kanchanaburi province

One of the pleasures of living in Chiang Mai was the proximity to the fabulous hot springs out at Mae On past Sankhampaeng. Often after a long trip feeling a bit sticky & grimy, I looked forward to a night at the hot springs with my partner at the time.

The Sippa Hot Springs Resort is an absolute winner for me, but at 2,000 baht a night it does eat into the budget a bit. The government run Sankhampaeng Springs next door are good value for money & they do have over night bungalows that do the job for a low price.

Now moving to Chiang Khong, the nearest hot springs are over Chiang Rai & Mae Chan way, but damned if any of them seem to provide over night accommodation.

Sippa Hot Springs is my favourite

Part of Doi Pha Hom Pok National Park the hefty dual pricing entry fee will set you back 300 baht (for adult foreign national).
Although I was able to talk my way (in Thai) into getting the foreign child rate (150 baht).
I recon i was just lucky though, as it was late in the day (around 4pm)

dsd.jpg

The hot springs are not as pretty as some I have been to, but they do have a good mix of both public (free) bathing areas as well as private cabins (which charge a fee. I dont recall how much, sorry, as I did not use them). Massage available too.

I really went purely because I intended to stay over night and then head to Huamereng the next day (which is a part of the National Park).

Fang Hot Springs is worth it if you intend to stay overnight. I was able to get this fantastic cabin in a quiet secluded spot for 1500 baht (peak price). Pricey, but lovely.

Here are the other accommodation options:
Untitled-8.jpg

There was a restaurant on site that was open until around 7pm I think..and they had fantastic grilled fish.

In the evening my accommodation was blissfully quiet and like something out of a movie:

Love this hot springs and national park.
Dual pricing here too, sadly, as seems to be the case everywhere :(
200 Baht/100 Baht for children (40 Baht/10 Baht if Thai)
Open daily 8:00am – 6pm.

The national park is a 592 square kilometer national park which also has walking trails and a 150 metre high six tier waterfall.
It is also host to a great deal of flora and fauna.

There are public bathing areas and huts and areas to cook eggs.
Restaurants on site as well.
You can also stay over. Wooden house accommodation is available as well as camping.

I don't have images handy anymore, but I did make a video some time back of the area.

Mae Um Long Hot Springs - Mae Sariang

These hot springs are located approximately 24 kms from Mae Sariang. Driving east on Route 108, the turnoff is on the left, about 13 kms from Mae Sariang.
[GPX=123103;13]Mae Um Long Hot Springs GPX Viewer[/GPX]

The sealed road descends 9kms from the 108 to the Mae Sariang River, and there is a signposted turnoff to the springs which are a kilometre downriver on a dirt road.
- there is also an 11 km dirt road (yellow line) that runs down the valley from the hot springs, meeting the R108 on the outskirts of Mae Sariang.

View attachment 123070
The Hot Springs are on the opposite side of the river. Previously, walking across the river was the only option.

hot-springs-mae-sariang.jpg

A swing bridge has since been built, but its not one that inspires confidence. The further across you get, the lower the wire rope handrail gets!!!
3-outside-hot-pools-1.jpg

This is a very rustic place, with several rough concrete pools outside, and two covered pools in the old bamboo bathhouse.
3-outside-hot-pools-2.jpg

It is a lovely place for a picnic lunch.
3-outside-hot-pools-5.JPG

3-outside-hot-pools-6.JPG

The bathhouse is somewhat primitive but that's what makes the place so unique and unpretentious.
4-bath-house-1-entrnce.JPG

There are two "rooms" in the bathhouse, a big tub in one, a smaller one in the second,
4-bath-house-2.jpg

Years ago, there was no partition - just huge room with two tubs side by side. The bamboo partition now provides a degree of privacy if there are two family groups wanting to use the bath house.

[format=h2]Pha Soet Hot Springs - Chiang Rai[/format]

The Pha Soet Hot Springs has two outdoors mineral hot spring pools, the large pool is for public bathing. There are spacious grounds, well suited to family picnics. As all aficionados of mineral hot springs know, the benefits of a good soak in a hot pool are manifold. It can ease the body into a state of relaxation in preparation for a good night’s sleep, helps detoxify your body, stimulates your blood circulation and relieves aches and pains in muscles and joints.

The service charges are very modest;
  • approximately 30 baht per adult and 10 baht per child for an outdoor pool
  • 50 baht per person for an indoor pool.
Family group with children often add some fun to their visit by cooking eggs in the hot spring.
During the tourist season, Thai massage may be available in the open pavilion and camping services are an option.

How to get there:
Pha Soet Hot Spring is located 20 km from the town of Chiang Rai and you can get there by road and also by long-tailed boat.

These springs are in the Lam Nam Kok National Park, located beside the Mae Nam Kok River and this is a pleasant place for a picnic. The hot springs / pool diameter is approximately 5 meters and the area has an outdoor hot spa. The average springs water temperature is 67C. The listed hot spa minerals include fluoride, nitrate, sulphate and iodine, none of which are harmful to bathers.

How to get there:
It is located approximately 1 km northwest of the Pha Soet Hot Springs - just a couple of minutes down the road. Directions are as for Pha Soet Hot Springs

Pai Hot Spring Spa Resort
Location HERE
Website HERE

The resort allows day visits, but overnight proves the best experience, as the springs are open to use 24 hours.
Overnight rates vary, but I was able to negotiate a discount easily (I arrived late and mentioned that agoda had advertised the basic room for 800 instead of the 1500 hotel rate - Peak season). They have some larger lovely lanna style houses on site to rent also.
Swimming pool and sun loungers on site and a nice restaurant overlooking the river (opens till late).
A decent buffet breakfast is included in price.

I didn't check what the day rates were, sorry.

Today I went to the Mae Chan Hot Springs.
20190312_115958.jpg
20190312_120802.jpg

They have a block of little rooms like this. Basic as it comes. 120 Baht with a towel.
Very hot water so it did the job even though I could only just stretch out, diagonally.

There are restaurants, open air foot baths, massage rooms etc and another block of slightly larger rooms.
Plus they have one VIP room, with 2 largish baths, so you can fill one with hot water and one with cold water, for the real hot - cold torture. For 400 Baht, may have to try that next time.

Nice one, hottest time of the year & testing out the hot springs.
I recall visiting those hot springs once upon a time in the hot season, but not indulging and settling for an ice cold soft drink.

BTW it's getting impressive how they are improving all the hot springs in the North now. Long may it continue, I need to start revisiting quite a few....in the cooler weather.

For elder bikers, hot springs are also about relieveing aches and pains....... an old back injury in my case.
Seems there are lots of guys in Chiang Rai who go once a week or so, to "take the waters".

According to the google map that heads this site the Pa Tueng Onsen hot spring is closed. A few weeks back, when it was a holiday created by the Covid virus, I stopped off with the wife and kids on the way back from Chiang Rai. Quite a few locals, many in the water and some trying the eggs boiled in the hotest spring. No entry fee, open air, everyone fully clothed.
