  1. Ayutthaya thread - multiple ride trips combined into single report

I have to mention Baifern Homestay, really nice place to say.
Family owned and managed, some of the friendliest hosts I ever encountered in Thailand. Price just over THB 1,000 for standard double up to THB 1,700 for deluxe suite. Spotlessly clean, beautiful garden, main building built entirely out of teak wood. Food is top class but if you want to eat outside there are dozens of stalls within walking distance. Free Wi-Fi, A/C, hot water, cable TV, gated parking space. Ayutthaya Historic Park just nearby. Listed at Agoda and Booking.

  2. Royal Elephant Kraal Village
    14.37680, 100.56841

Never heard of this place before, spotted the camp from the main road and stopped by to check what is this all about.
Apparently tourist attraction, much advertised by TAT.

It is a non-profit organization catering for retired elephants. They buy old and retired elephants and take care of them. Tourists are invited to spend few days or weeks and help looking after elephants and bonding with them. There is a an active breeding program, since 2000, 66 elephants were born here.

I spent about 20 minutes here without actually entering the main compound. Then these guys showed up and elephant got excited upon seeing such beautiful bike didisaythat_zpsowo9shpq.

  3. Visiting Ayutthaya Historic Park. Hard to believe this entire area was inundated few yours ago during some of the worst floods in recent history.
The ancient capital of Siam - UNESCO World Heritage Site, one of Thailand's most precious historical sites.

Ayutthaya has been melting pot of all sorts of ethnic and religious groups.
The ancient Kingdom did extensive trading with middle eastern merchants who later settled in the area which explains sizeable and moderate islamic community today.

Also notable in past, sizeable Japanese, Portuguese and Dutch communities. More about that later on.

  4. Japanese Village: 14.33276, 100.57813

Dating back to the late 16th century when a number of foreigners came to Ayutthaya Kingdom for trading, Japanese government allowed their citizens to trade overseas, and a group of them came to trade in Ayutthaya. The king of Thailand let the Japanese settle outside the city center. Since then, more and more Japanese came to live here.

My next stop was to be Portuguese Settlement but for some reason GPS was acting up and couldn't find the place.

  5. Bang Pa-In summer Royal Palace. Definitely must see - almost 400 years old.
Can't remember how much was the entrance fee. You may hire electric golf cart and drive within palace compound. THB 400 for 30 minutes additional fees apply.

Palace was brainchild of King Prasat Thong, back in 1632. It was renovated by King Mongkut in mid 19th century, however majority of of the present buildings were constructed between 1872 and 1889 by King Rama V.

Beautiful landscaped gardens throughout, lookout towers, throne rooms and Chinese style buildings, lake pavilions.

  6. Tragic event took place at Bang Pa-In Palace back in 1880.

The Queen Consort Sunanda Kumariratana and her daughter drowned when her royal boat capsized on the way to Bang Pa-In.
Many witnesses to the accident did not dare to touch the queen, at the time capital offense, not even to save her life. The grief-stricken King Rama V Chulalongkorn later erected a memorial to her and their child within the palace compound.
