The amazing disputed clifftop Thai / Khmer ruins of Khao Pha Viharn were opened fora short time in January 1992.
As they opened for visitors from the Thai side I rode out there with a couple of mates for a look while you could get access from the Thai side under a "gentleman's agreement between to two competing nations. It didn't last lone of course, & it was closed again for decades
Being out there at the time in 92 was really something special.

My collection of images from the day.

You most definitely were not alone. There were hundreds of Thais there to see that special place.

It cost a massive 20 baht admission.

Maybe the Thais paid 5 baht or it was free? We didn't care, & I don't really care today about the double pricing that so many expats love to whinge about today. It is what it is, just get on with it guys.

It was a bit of a climb up those wonderful steps.

Great photos David!

I was there on one of my first trips to Thailand, December 2003. Sadly I dont have any photos from that trip….

It's interesting to see the many visitors. I rode up the Khmer side on a rented 20-year old TransAlp in 2016 and had the whole place to myself. No other tourists. The road up the hill would be too steep and rough for an ordinary car but fine for a bike or 4WD.

A couple of years ago i wanted to see how far I could go from the Thai side. I only got as far as the National Park gate charging farangs ten times more than the local rate, which I was not going to pay just for a half hour of riding to the closed border and turning around.
