May 1987 & a long run out to Pai via Samoeng & Wat Chan.

These were long, all day rides in those days.
You had to pick your time when you went – not too muddy and not too dusty.
The dust from Wat Chan to Pai was a challenge, especially with loads of rocks buried in the dust.
You could also get caught out badly if a sudden storm came in.
Many a time you had to push on because it was getting late or there was a storm threatening, so you never quite got all the photos you wanted.

Hi David, I ran across this post last week before I rode up to Pai taking this route (CNX-Samoeng-Wat Chan-Pai) for the first time since 2001. It's much a much improved from 2001 and even in 2001 it was a good road compared to what you describe in 1987 (dust hiding rocks - ugh!) though in 2001 we went on to Mae Hong Son rather than Pai and I hear that section is not bad but still a bit rustique. This trip we headed up 1265 to 1095 to Pai. I was surprised to see that most of the forest from Wat Chan to 1095 has already burnt. Basically good roads, occasionally bumpy in corners but over-all a five hour ride including a quitiaw break in Wat Chan.

What could possibly go wrong, alcohol, gunpowder & fireworks & dodgy construction.
