So I’m 50, and a new transplant from the US, Texas. My first bike was a Honda XL 100, I have had all kinds of bikes since then from dirt (RM’s, CR’s, KX, KDX... etc..) to street, sold my HD Ultra Limited before moving. I’m interested in hearing from anyone who can advise or share on what’s street legal in Laos, ie KLX 250 enduro types bikes, legal on the streets? And then is it at all advisable to buy in Thailand and import it, 30% Tax on the sales price, is this accurate? Is there any credit for tax paid in Thailand...? Of course I’ll vet it out before doing anything, just looking for some brotherly advice.... thanks.

Guess I’m bored tonight.... received a quote on a New 2018 CFR 250 in Thailand delivered to me in Lao for 135,000 TB. Thinking about it. Still not sure about the tags, and what’s legal.... so will check it out...

Vientiane. Laos
Any bike up to 250cc is legal if it is taxed and registered in Laos.

Its generally not worth importing yourself unless it is something special that you can't buy in Laos. You will have to pay tax & registration at the Tonpheung office/yard 15km out of Vientiane, which is very hard to do yourself unless you speak Lao and know the system. You need to pay a fixer to jump through all the hoops and the cost for a 250cc is about 13 million kip - about US$1450, on top of the bike price.
