Big(ger) bikes on Thai trains

I've taken my Honda CRF 250L from Bangkok to both Chiang Mai and Nong Khai over the past months. Paid a little less than 1,100฿ each single journey, no hassles, great.

Probably like a lot of other riders I'm excited by the introduction of BMW's F800 GS and the chatter of a new African Twin or even the release of a KLR here in Thailand.

However, as I always begin from Bangkok and don't want to waste a day either end of a trip riding through flat paddy fields my question is: has anyone taken a larger bike on a train in Thailand? Is it allowed? What are the costs etc? Any other considerations / advice?

Just weighing up the personal practicalities and viability of owning an mid sized adventure bike and living in BKK.

Many thanks!

Hi Craig,

I have taken my Ninja on the train a few times..
Some have taken BMW etc etc.

It is a bit dodgy to be honest.. Dirt bike OK. Heard one or two horror stories.. Frank has a dent in his Ninja tank.
Really expensive bike.. I would use Embassy Freight to Chiang Mai. (They do BKK / CNX only)
Cost is around 2500 each way. Next day or day after.

Not looked in to any freight companies for Udon / Nong Khai..
There must be some that will transport a Big bike in a safe and secure way.

The freight sections is at the back.. You go dow the road turn to the left and head back up the soi behind the entrance.
You will see the loading dock and other trucks and vans.

They can also pick the bike up and drop it off for around 800 baht.. If that level of service is needed.

Cheers

I do think the price is made up on the spot.
They tried to charge my 500 baht more each way.. But remembered the price K. Nat from Pistonshop told me.

So rang them back and said that price.. Then Nat rang me and said.. No problems.. Same price :)

The usual case of doing your home work and when getting the Farang price.. pull them up about it in a nice way and all is worked out

Cheers
Brian

I shipped a VTR250 via Post Office from Hua Hin to CM, no problems, wasn't expensive.

I was told the bike would be shipped by truck which carries only bikes. Don't know if that was true or not.
