Phimai - Korat via Prasat Hin Phanom Wan.
A short ride of 71 kms. Depart from Sai Ngam at 12.30PM. Check into Siri Hotel Korat at 3.30PM.
En route to Korat a visit to Prasat Hin Phanom Wan was in order.
It was also a convenient spot to hook up with an old mate Harri the Finn, living in Korat, & once upon a time a regular customer of the original GTR Library Service bookshop. Harri & I go back 35 years.
Lates 80s at "Rock Tower" at Nong Hoi / Mon Cham
Harri & I, 35 years later at Phanom Wan.
Prasat Hin Phanom Wan
Phanom Wan in 1979 from my backpacking days in the kingdom.
They've done a brilliant job restoring these ancient ruins.
Excavations at Phanom Wan indicate it has seen continuous use for at least 500 years.
Some brickworks excavated are believed to be from the 11th century & in the 13th-14th centuries a new stone building was constructed over the top?
Originally a Hindu temple to Shiva, it was converted to a Buddhist temple by the Khmer King Jayavarman VII.
Phanom Wan is the 5th largest Khmer temple in Thailand.
The main stupa facing east was built of sandstone and was connected to the cloister by a square path of 25.50 m (83.7 ft) length and 10.20 m (33.5 ft) width.
The stupa has three arched gateways. In the north gate, it enshrines a standing Buddha statue in the posture of forgiveness according to the Ayutthaya style.
The sanctuary is surrounded by laterite wall, the southwest area is a sandstone stupa called "Prang Noi" with the large Buddha statue inside.
Outside the area comprises gopura (entrance) situated in the form of tall tower in four directions.
The east side of the sanctuary features the trace of a baray (reservoir surrounding the Khmer Hindu temple is assumed to be a cosmic ocean in Hindu cosmology) and an earth hill.
2 nights in Korat were most relaxing catching up with Harri & hanging out.
The Siri hotel was my place of stay.
An old hotel but comfy & with undercover parking.
The beauty of the Siri is the location with some enjoyable eateries & cafes nearby

Mae Sa Valley
21st October 1978 On the way to Mae Rim / Mae Sa I think this is R107 the Chiang Mai - Mae Rim road. The Shell petrol station I think, was near the old immigration office, which became Chang Puak police & is now the Forsenic Police office. 1982 Country House in the Mae Sa Valley, one of my...
