Probably some kind of big jap traily or cruiser 400-600cc would be fine,
you need to inspect the bike vary carefully, some are well maintained , others are dodgy. The roads around here and down to Trat , KoChang are fine. Bring a decent helmet,

I'll 2nd what Jerry says, there is a huge availability of bikes to hire here in Pattaya but a lot of the hirers stipulate in the contract you sign that you cannot go more than 50km from Pattaya. That is the case with the CRM250 I'm hiring right now, I wouldn't want to take it much further than 50km anyway and the furthest I've been on it is to Rayong which is about 50km as the crow flies. I've said to the lady I hired it from that I may wish to swap bikes to something more suitable for long journeys for a few days to go Hua Hin or maybe Koh Chang and she said fine and didn't have a problem with that but then I've built up a degree of trust with her.

So you have a choice, either you dont tell them your going further than 50km and hope for the best or you be honest and hope you can come to an arrangement - money speaks volumes here so I dont think you should have a problem.

The lady I rent from who based on my own experience I would recommend to anybody is called Porn and she is based at a small beer bar on Beach Rd between Sois 8 and 9 just before you get to the Police station, she is the only renter in town I have found who has Trail/Enduro bikes but she also rents things like Honda CB400 Fours which would be perfect for a few days touring I'd say, she has at least 1 Honda TransAlp aswell which would be ideal and a couple of XT400's. PM me if you want her phone number.

If you intended going south, they hire Harleys here on Phuket, you could get a bus/plane down and do the riding around Southern Thailand, at least no too much traffic that way.

www.ridethailand.com is Sumon's shop. He organises Phuket Bike Week, also has a Thai motorbike magazine, Ride Thailand which is in English and Thai

Cheers

unusually cool in Thailand at the moment Pattaya was ony 27c about 75f today and was 19c 66f last night Chiang rai was as low as 110c 54 f and low at night even a little frost in the high hills.
Factor in the wind at its even cooler.

Tonite I am in Chiang Rai, its nice and sunny during the day, but just got back from local resturant the locals sitting round a fire trying to keep warm, suppose I have been spoilt living in Southern Thailand for 7 years, had to put socks on to keep my little tootsies warm, before only ever put socks on when motor bike boots were accompanying them.

great weather during the day for riding, est to pull into a guest house before dark and make sure the place has a HOT SHOWER

Bbbbbrrrrrrrr
