One night in October 1991 we had a night in the Hmong village of Kiu Khan, on R1290, staying at Jon Boyes Gh.

Another farang couple staying at the GH, convinced the Hmong to try some farang "disco dancing" with a few lessons.

The bulk of the village was crowded into the hut, for a night of fun, pre electricity days.

It was an outrageous experience & one of the best times in those early days.

OH how fabulous! What an amazing memory and so glad you recorded these events, David. I love the expressions and the mid-dance action.
My guess is that even the most remote places have internet access now so will have seen what the rest of the world is up to, but at that time it would surely have been fun and strange to see the westerners dancing.
Although my time with you in Muang Sing would not compare to this moment, I do wish the girls at the guesthouse hadn't drunk themselves under the table that night and that we had all ended up in the nightclub as they suggested. It would have been really funny.
I recall there was some random drunk man trying to get both of us to go along with him to the club anyway..haha!

Hi Zed
What I also remember about this night in Kiu Khan
No electricity - only torch light & maybe a few candles burning. Kiu Khan in those days had no electricity.
I think there was 1 TV that Jon had in his GH , than ran off batteries or a generator for an hour or two in the evening. All the villagers used to crowd outside his hut to gawk at the TV through windows and doors at night.
So with no smart phones, most of the enthusiastic dancers, had probably never seen dancing like that before??
It was a wild, outrageous night of fun & dust kicked up in the hut from the earth floor.
