Does this mean the end of the ridiculous import tax so you can actually get a registered new bike without breaking the bank.

If so i would be up for a R1 or R6 :D

deckx,
"Does this mean the end of the ridiculous import tax so you can actually get a registered new bike without breaking the bank."

No  It Means you get a Brand New Fully Legal Bike with Warranty and Service ( Question Mark over the Service?) But your Bank will still be Broken  .
Better than a Bodgy Stolen Bike at an Inflated Price Sold to you by some Shady Character which is Still Illegal and Has a Dodgy Plate!!!

the free trade between japan and thailand only covers bikes under 250cc so they should be a lot cheaper than you can buy in aus/uk/usa etc
i would love a 08 YZ250 smoker

Mike, just been up to CNX Charoenmotors and made a reservation for one FJR1300, upon asking I was assured that all bikes on sale/show are ready for E10. Bikes currently available are: R1, R6, R6 limited edition in yellow, FZ1, FZ6 and FJR1300A. I think there's only 3 bikes left for sale. R1 and FZ1 & 6. Cheers, Franz

Franz,

Already emailed Yamaha telling them my choice would be a TDM 900 but actually if/when cash becomes available I'll probably get a Kawa Versys from RB.

I don't ride much on gravel roads but maybe one day when pigs fly I'll get to CNX and.......

Great to see the Yam's are selling so well up in Chiang Mai.
The Khorat shop is called Sibsima Motor, but still carries the Yamaha Square badge. Its on the main no 2 highway heading through the town, on the left side heading south out of the town centre
It does not seem to have generated the publicity that CM has by its opening parties, website and helpful comments by GTR posters.
It was very quite on Saturday when I had my service and the R1, R6, FZ1 and FZ6, and the FJR1300A are on display and not sold, not sure if Yamaha will arrange them to be moved to CM if required up there.

Obviously I have voted for the FJR1300A with my cheque book, but would also be interested in a street legal 250cc trail bike, such as the Raid. Not sure which is the current equivalent model.

Picked up my brand new FJR1300A last Saturday 8.3. and drove her down all the way to Rayong, what a bike, if you are on slippery tarmac like hot asphalt, 3rd gear still spins the wheels. Incredible handling, put her into a turn already all the way down to the footpegs, comes out like a train from every turn. Will post a picture next weekend. Don't know just what to do right now. Put the XJ750Seca to Charoenmotors for engine overhaul, will get her repainted too at another shop, can't let go of the BMW-F650GS............3 bikes are simply too much for one guy to own. But which one to go that's a tough decision......

Wished I had problems like you Franz!!! I'm afraid my resources limit me to one bike at a time.

The FJR is a beauty and from what I've heard provides endless km of comfortable enjoyment. Happy riding.

Dougal I have nearly the same problems as everyone else that's why I leased both the Beamer (now paid up) and the Yamaha. Need to get rid of the F650 as funds start to run dry like the Gobi Desert. When you have time during the weekend or come the Bowin way, just give me a call so I can treat you to lunch/dinner together. Cheers, Franz

Re FTA btween Japan and Thailand. As of day 1 of the agreement all m/c made in Japan under 250cc will be imported Duty Free. These must however be exported and imported by commercially registered m/c dealers/companies.
No private importations qualify.
As for bikes larger than 250cc, duty reduces 5% per year effective each January.
Note also that duty is only a small part of the overall taxes applied, the same as with wine and cars for example.
By far the largest tax in % terms is Excise Tax. FTA's do not preclude Excise Tax which to some extent explains why cheap Aussie wine and cars are still expensive in LOS.
As far as bikes are concerned it is the end of the grey market as we know it and possibly under the agreement (though not in it of course) the Japs have insisted on Thai authorities cracking down on bikes stolen in Japan ending up in Thailand.

Sorry to be a pain in the butt Johhny but can you please post some links to give us all the benefit of your sources for your statements or are these just assumptions based upon your worldly knowledge?

Thanks

Ally

Look it up on the Thai Customs website.
I'm in the import export business including to/from Japan so it is my business to know what's going on.
And yes worldly knowledge included.

May I be so bold to ask what the FJR set you back? I've got 70000 trouble-free miles on my '04 I reserved and bought new here in the states. Will be staying long term in Thailand starting next year and going to miss her as I can't stomach the shipping costs and import duty. At least they fixed the blast furnace effect on the 2nd gen. I had to block the airflow through the back of the fairing on mine to keep my nuts from roasting.

Thanks David. I suspected as much, but wanted to be sure. For that money, I could buy 2 FJR's here. Looks like I'll just take the $4-5K '04 trade in value. Put in $8-9K of my own + $2-3K shipping and do the perpetual visa/carnet deal for a while. If SHTF, then I could always re-export it back to US and still be money ahead............at least in theory.

Feejer, mine cost as David indicated THB 777.000,- plus free first class insurance in the first year, taxes paid up, registration included. I ordered additionally 2 original side-cases/panniers which set me back another THB 38.000,- which is cheap compared to Europe, just asked my dealer in Austria for the original topcase incl. passenger pillow and mounting bracket, he asked me for > Euro 900,- !!!!! As there are no original topcases for the FJR available in Thailand, I fit a GIVI E450 for THB 5.500,-, Charoenmotors Chiang Mai custom-built me a bracket that does look like a very professional job and not the ususal sidestreet-dirtfloor-shop bungling.....Just had the first service done at the dealer in Bangkok without any troubles. One more important fact is that Yamaha gives you here a 2 years guarantee, what other suppliers don't......
If your funds are limited and you come to work legally in LOS, you can also lease-buy any bike just as I did. You're not, then try www.thaisecondhand.com or www.bahtsold.com for used ones. There's a truckload of used Beemers which are usually registered legally. Don't take an unregistered bike anyway......

Franz, thanks for the links. Used is always an option. I never needed to mount a topcase to the Yam since if me and the missus want to go on extreme range excursions, we take the K1200LTC. But sure sounds like you are off to a fine start with the FJR and should have many years of motoring bliss ahead. Cheers!
