Chiang Rai and North for three days

The morning was spent in a pretty frusrating way by trying to find a oplace in Chiang mai to sell me some lighter gloves as my heavy ones are not good and i have sunburnt hands. I eventually left Chiang Mai and found a hardware shop in Doi Suket to sell me a pair which 'almost' fit. From Doi suket I went back to the main highway and basically followed that all the way to Chiang Rai. On route I was overtaken by a couple of motor cycles which proved to be BJ and HT on their way north, although I didn't know it at the time. I stopped for lunch and at a small roadside cafe and as I left they were a few meters down the road having theirs. Closer to Chiang Rai I pulled in for petrol and sure enough there they were again. I thought i had better let them know I did not have them under surveilance and that's when we met.

We eventually met again at the Chiang Rai hotel and checked in for what I consider a very reasonable rate of 450 baht a night. Liam went for a run and I joined Brendon on the rooftop bar for a cold beer.

Evening time we went to town and found a decent small bar with the racing on TV and spent a nice evening together sharing stories.

Following morning I felt a bit seedy but wanted an earlyish start. I called Liam to let him know and was pleased to hear he sounded far worse than me. Brendons bike had gone so I presume he had left early.

I prepared for Mai Sai and as far as I know they went home.

As you will see from the track, I did my usual trick and set off in the wrong direction, but at always I found a lovely small village with very friendly and helpful people. I organised a bit of breakfast. I had hoped to follow a more minor road north but with a big day ahead I went back to Chian Rai and took the right road this time. North to Mai Chan and all the way to Mai Sai. Had a giood look around the border crossing area and chatted ot an american guy who was doing his regular border run. We discussed the various methods of keeping the feeling in your backside when riding! Had a Ice Coffee in a small cafe then tool off towards Golden Triangle by what I assume is the traditional route. Got there early afternoon and checked out the sights and stretching the legs a bit.

Down to Nam Man Bong and I had intended going on to Chiang Khong but being a bit unsure of the travelling time, and my commitment to not ride after dark, I pulled the pin on this idea and headed south to Doi Luang and home.

A great day and again, some beautiful scenery. With so much riding and new experiences I am getting a bit confused as to what I saw on what day, so I won't even try to sort the photos out.

Back for a shower and a walk to town to check out the night bazzar, couple of cold ones in the same bar as the night before and an early night for the long journey home.

Out following one of the back alleys I like to explore I found a lovely spot but the rough road was not good for my bike as it turned to wet dirt. I stopped to take in the area and heard the sound of a motor bike coming out of the bush towards me. I imagined it was a farmer or something like then it got louder and out of the bush flew these four guys motocrossing. They stopped and we talked a bit, they had a good laugh at my tyres then took off like maniacs.

Stopped for 'afternoon tea' with these guys. They taught me to eat the fish on the stick with a lot of salt on it. The old girl on the first picture arrived whilst I was eating and she was not aware that I had dropped my trousers to let the air get to my legs (I did have shorts on though) and when I stood up she started on about something which created a lot of laughuing from everyone there. I suspect she was impressed by my muscular physique...........or maybe not

Last day of this trip and I was set to ride across to fang and head down homw from there. On looking at Davids map the road across the terrain I would have preferred showed a dotted line so I took it that it may be impassable at this time of year. I wouldn't have worried too much and given it a go had I not wished ot get back ot Chiang mai that evening so Ill do the trip again next time with the route already plotted for me.

I therefore decided ot head south and visit Payheo on the way home then head across the hills. The weather was 'ok' when I left. The route is too large to show on an image so Ill just put the profile up here for this trip.

Phayeoandhome.jpg

I have been hot every day so far and started oit smell like a rancid polecat after a few hours so today I thought I would throw caution to the wind and wear jeans and no wet weather gear.

I nheaded south to start with and went off track through the rice paddys and a few of the smaller sois until I felt i should get a move on. The sky became dark and out of nowehere the biggest deluge I have experienced fell down. I managed to find fairly quickly one of those little roof with seat contraptions at the sid eof the road and dived in there to get my over trousers and rain jacket on. I was pretty wet anyway but such is life. I set off again and within one monute i was in glorious sunshine with dry roads!!. I rod elike thsat for maybe ten minutes to make sure I was safe, took my gear off again and sure enough, the skies opened. I suspect I have specialised gear to control the weather. This time I put the gear on and kept it on. At least the smell kept the flies away from me.

Stopped in Phaeyo for a coffee and a sit for a while. The I set off but did not want to retrack the Chiang Dao route I haved already done so I looked for the 120 across the hills. I am so pleased that I did so. That has ot be one of the most stunning scenic routes i have followed. There is a scenic stopping point on the way and I stopped there to ask for petrol because my light was flashing. The guy waid 2 kms down the road so I thanked him and set off. 10 kmn later I wondered if he was just having a laugh because I didn't buy any of his food.

Anyway, a guy at what appeared ot be a checkpoint sent me off up a farm track and said there would be petrol about 3 kms there. I had no choice so off I went. As I passed a smaller bike with a couple on it I indicated my tank and they pointed ahead so I felt fairly comfortable. Sure enough, a petrol station and I felt good again.

That ride across the 120 is so so good. Anyone who has not done it surely should do so.

Eventually back to Chiang Mai and an early night. All in all a great day and one to be remembered. I am going back to Chiang Rai next week, and do the Fang thing this time.

Photos follow, unsorted....

It was very dark and rainy throughout the last day in particular. I am not a good photographer and have simple point and shoot camera so this is about as good as it comes.

The Dtracker has road tyres rather than dirt tyres. I think that was the joke as they had come out of the bush area.

Cheers

Congrats on the ride reports and making such an effort to photograph as you rode along.
I don't think its your photography that's anyways at fault - good composition and time went into these images.
I think the camera is struggling in lower light as there are some vignetting and sharpness issues.
Good on you for amusing us all - Nim See Sang dinners do take their toll!
And the 'new' Samoeng Loop was hilarious.
Thanks for the taking the time to entertain us all.
Cheers and keep the trip reports coming.

Haha, Brendan and I paid for the fun we had on Saturday night, had a late start on Sunday. I sat in the lobby of the hotel Sunday morning, bike all loaded up, waiting for BJ for half an hour before I saw him hanging out the window of his hotel room naked shouting that he fell asleep.

Nice pictures, now I wish I had headed north with you. Well, maybe again this week if you rent the ER6. It was good to meet you.

Good to see you had a trip around the GT while you were
up at Chiang Rai Tony.
I'm sure we won't be passing you so easy now you have the ER6.
I think maybe the other way around.
Liam how did it take us 7 hours to get back Sunday. Too many breaks I think.
Oh and as for Sunday morning, some of us old blokes were up at 7 riding around Chiang Rai. :D So a bit of catch up sleep was due.
Nice trip and good to meet you both, hope we can organise another ride before you go back Tony.
And next time lets pick a hotel that does have the MotoGP on.

No worries, we found it at one of the little bars on Soi Chet Yot (sp?)

Met BJ in Doi Saket

Somewhere before 118/HW1 Tony came sneaking up on us at a gas station.
p1010333.jpg

The Nimseesing restaurant was pleasant, nice breeze and pretty view.
p1010338r.jpg

p1010339.jpg

Completely empty though, and the TV had only 10 channels. MotoGP wasn't on any of them. I'm glad some guys came on this trip, Chiang Rai is pretty slow at the moment.
p1010340s.jpg

The waitress was more interested in the view than serving pesky customers. She also didn't like us playing with the TV.

From the restaurant.

Finally found the race on TV after some scouting around.

BJ and I split from Tony the next morning and spent the day exploring on our way back to CM. Took Highway 1150 through Phrao for a little fun. On top of the ridge it was wonderful, cold and breezy, which felt great.

Today I had planned a further trip North through Fang and the border region with stopover in Chiang Rai again but a small dose of the squitters in the night left me a bit nervous about riding without regular toilet stops. Instead I headed for Doi Inthanon after things had calmed down a bit. Had a great ride up the mountain and got caught in a terrential downpour.

Anyway, the relevance of this message on the thread is a 7 am start for Fang and a two day trip to do what I was meant to do today (Chiang Rai and the North again.) Auke has kindly shared his ideas on the run and I'll be following his route.

If anyone happens to be in Chiang Rai Saturday night maybe catch up for a beer.

T

Not related but I had tio take this one and add it. Opposite my room in Chiang Mai is a building project abour five or six stories. These are the guys working on it. I love the bamboo scaffolding.

You're not kidding about the bed. Nimseesing has some of the most comfortable beds I've ever slept in in Thailand. Massive California King mattresses that are incredibly plush and comfortable.
