I am planning to go to Laos for a weeks riding but my new bike plates still have still not arrived - I have the green book. Is it possible to cross the border and tour in Laos without plates?

You should have plates on the bike, but the officials - customs - might let you go if you be nice to them.
You won't really know until you get to the border & talk nicely to them.
What border crossing do you plan to use?

Easy enough to get a temporary plate made, just show the shop the green book. Costs Baht 150 in Korat. Just replace it when the "real" one arrives, the copy does not have the government seal , but they don't look so closely at it. Have had one on my XL600 for 10 years of border crossings after loosing the original in the bush.

For others who might be in a similar predicament.

I have now completed the trip, without plates. Had no trouble either crossing the border or anywhere on my 2000 km trip through Lao.

As long as you have the green book and registration, no problems.
