Crossing to Malaysia from Thailand

We are thinking of taking out Thai registered bike into Malaysia. I have read on the forum that this is pretty easy and no carnet is needed. The bike is not registered in our name but we could get that done if it will make it easier. Is it like crossing into Laos - where if we can prove we have owner's permission to export we can take out of Thailand? What about at the Malaysian side do they care if the bike is registered in someone else's name?
