A COMPETITOR in the Finke Desert Race killed when his motorcycle struck a tree yesterday has been identified as a Queensland man.

Alice Springs police and rally organisers said the motorcyclist died following the crash, 130km south of Alice Springs, about 2.30pm (ACST) yesterday.

This afternoon police announced he was 37-year-old David Lesley Schmidt of the central Queensland town of Dalby.

The Finke Desert Race is an annual two-day, off-road, multi-terrain race through the desert country between Alice Springs and the Aputula community in the Finke Desert, in the territory's south.

This is the race's 33rd year.
